Abstract:

This study discusses the application of Taguchi method in assessing minimum entropy generation and maximum heat transfer rate for natural convection in an enclosure embedded with isothermal cylinder. The simulations were planned based on Taguchi’s L25 orthogonal array with each trial performed under different conditions of position and aspect ratio (AR) of the cylinder. The thermal lattice Boltzmann based on D3Q19 methods without any turbulent submodels was purposed to simulate the flow and thermal fields. A relaxation time method with the stability constants is introduced to solve turbulent natural convection problems. Signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) analysis were carried out in order to determine the effects of process parameters and optimal factor settings. Isotherms, streamlines and Nusselt numbers were obtained and discussed. Total entropy generations in various cases are also reported and optimum case is presented based on minimum entropy generation and maximum heat transfer rate. Finally, confirmation tests verified that Taguchi method achieved optimization of heat transfer rate with sufficient accuracy.

buckling of viscoelastic composite plates using the finite strip method

Natural Convection Flow from an Isothermal Horizontal Circular Cylinder in Presence of Heat Generation

Natural convection laminar boundary layer flow from a horizontal circular cylinder with a uniform surface temperature at presence of heat generation has been investigated. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form and the resulting nonlinear systems of partial differential equations are solved numerically applying two distinct methods namely (i) Implicit...

Optimization of the Geometric Parameters of the Protective Spur Dike using Taguchi Method and GRA.

In general, engineering designs need to optimize the factors affecting the under-study phenomenon; however, this is often a costly and time-consuming process. In this regard, new methods have been developed to optimize with fewer tests; thus, they can make the whole process more affordable. In this study, Taguchi and Taguchi-GRA methods were used to design the geometric parameters of the protec...

Numerical simulation of Laminar Free Convection Heat Transfer around Isothermal Concave and Convex Body Shapes

In the present research, free convection heat transfer from isothermal concave and convex body shapes is studied numerically. The body shapes investigated here, are bi-sphere, cylinder, prolate and cylinder with hemispherical ends; besides, they have the same height over width (H/D = 2). A Numerical simulation is implemented to obtain heat transfer and fluid flow from all of the geometries in a...

Roughness Optimization of Electroless Ni-B Coatings Using Taguchi Method

In this paper, the authors present an experimental study of roughness characteristics of electroless Ni-B coatings and optimization of the coating process parameters based on L27 Taguchi orthogonal design. Three coating process parameters are considered viz. bath temperature, reducing agent concentration, and nickel source concentration. It is observed that concentration of reducing agent toget...

Performance optimization of a rotary mower using Taguchi method

Optimum energy consumption and prevention of energy losses are important issues in various fields including agricultural engineering. Mower is one of the agricultural machineries that can waste too much energy if does not function properly. In this study, the performance of a single disc rotary mower was studied and optimized by measurement of cutting quality of the stem cross section (cutting ...
