On the Local Scour around Group Piers in Series by Experimental Tests
Authors
Abstract:
In this research a physical model is presented. A trapezoidal shape of channel with 1.45 m width, 1 meter depth and banks slope of 1H: 1.5V was used. Circular piers (6, 8 and 10cm diameter) were tested under three different flow discharges of 50, 65 and 80 lit/s and three different median bed material sizes equal to 0.94, 1.31 and 2.12 mm. Seven different longitude distance to pier diameter ratios (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4 and 5) were tested. Measurement of scour depth (upstream, around and downstream of pier) was accomplished in 10, 15, 20, 30, 60, 120, 240 and 360 minutes from the beginning of each test. The results showed that 30% to 40%, 55% to 65% and more than 90% of local scour occurs at first two minutes, at first 10 minutes and 120 to 200 minutes from the beginning of test respectively. The effect of different parameter especially the distance between piers on scour depth at group piers in series was evaluated and the results were compared to other investigators. It was found that our results is best fitted with the general form of well known Sheppard et al. (2004)’s equation.

Experimental Investigation of Scour Hole Geometry around Circular Bridge Piers
Failure of the bridges due to local scour around their piers can cause serious life losses and property damages and create significant environmental problems. In this experimental study, scour hole geometry around circular bridge piers were investigated. The experiments were carried out in a rectangular flume 80 cm wide, 18.6 m long and 75 cm high by using uniform sediment with a median diamete...
full textEffect of Collars and Bars in Reducing the Local Scour Around Cylindrical Bridge Piers
In the present work, the efficiency of single and double collar in reducing scour rate and depth around cylindrical bridge piers was studied experimentally. In order to reduce the strength of wake vortices, different numbers of bars were also installed at the downstream face of the pier in combination with a single collar. The best result was achieved for double collar when the collars were ins...
full textPrediction of scour depth around bridge piers using Gaussian process
A reliable prognostics framework is essential to prevent catastrophic failure of bridges due to scour. In the U.S., scour accounts for almost 60% of bridge failures. Currently available techniques in the literature for predicting scour are mostly based on empirical equations and deterministic regression models, like Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines, and do not predict the evolution o...
full textTime Development of Local Scour around Semi Integral Bridge Piers and Piles in Malaysia
Scouring around a bridge pier is a complex phenomenon. More laboratory experiments are required to understand the scour mechanism. This paper focused on time development of local scour around piers and piles in semi integral bridges. Laboratory data collected at Hydraulics Laboratory, University of Malaya was analyzed for this purpose. Tests were performed with two different uniform sediment si...
full textExperimental Study for Protection of Piers Against Local Scour Using Slots
The most important causes of bridge failure are local scour. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of slot as a protection device in reduction of depth of scour at cylindrical piers under clear water flow conditions. The development time of scour depth at the circular pier with and without a slot as a protection device was conducted. The experimen...
