Abstract:

Molecules are the basic and most important players of life. Molecules are composed of atoms, and each molecule has two main specifications or inheritances that are structures, and in biomedical applications, biological function. This dichotomy can be compared to living organisms or humans whom possess genotype and phenotype. Each of the two main inherited elements contains a variety of feature classes and sub-categories. Due to ease of use, the scientific community focuses on elaborating the structure, rather than the function. Of course, this has also caused many debates on the priority of structure over the function or vice versa. To better understand the features of the structure that could affect function and hence translate them into therapeutic or diagnostic applications, we may look at molecules through their properties that is an intermediary step in the process, which mostly includes the physico-chemical aspects.

Number crunching at EPFL

Colliding with a Crunching Bubble

In the context of eternal inflation we discuss the fate of Λ = 0 bubbles when they collide with Λ < 0 crunching bubbles. When the Λ = 0 bubble is supersymmetric, it is not completely destroyed by collisions. If the domain wall separating the bubbles has higher tension than the BPS bound, it is expelled from the Λ = 0 bubble and does not alter its long time behavior. If the domain wall saturates...

Crunching Biofilament Rings

We discuss a curious example for the collective mechanical behavior of coupled nonlinear monomer units entrapped in a circular filament. Within a simple model we elucidate how multistability of monomer units and exponentially large degeneracy of the filament’s ground state emerge as a collective feature of the closed filament. Surprisingly, increasing the monomer frustration, i.e., the bending ...

DNA Barcoding of Malagasy Rosewoods: Towards a Molecular Identification of CITES-Listed Dalbergia Species

Illegal selective logging of tropical timber is of increasing concern worldwide. Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot and home to some of the world's most sought after tropical timber species. Malagasy rosewoods belong to the genus Dalbergia (Fabaceae), which is highly diverse and has a pantropical distribution, but these timber species are among the most threatened as a consequence of intensiv...

Molecular investigation and DNA Barcoding of Platycephalus indicus from the Persian Gulf

This study aimed to use mitochondrial DNA barcoding method to undrestand better toxanomic status of the Platycephalus indus and find genetic linkage with other reported specimens from different parts of the world as well as to manage the optimal utilization of native species and sustainable conservation. Sampling was performed from coastal waters of Hormozgan province. DNA was extracted from th...
