New findings in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) anther culture
Authors
Abstract:
In this research, some independent experiments were carried out for investigating the effects of microspore developmental stage, bud pretreatments (cold, heat and Ca), and embryo induction medium on anther culture of some strawberry cultivars. The results showed that the percentages of responsive and embryogenic anthers in cultivar Paros in liquid medium were influenced not only by different developmental stages of microspores, but also by the ratio of mass/volume of the cultured anthers. Moreover, study of the different bud pretreatments in anther culture of four strawberry cultivars demonstrated a highly significant interaction between bud pretreatments and cultivars in the three studied traits including the percentages of responsive, embryogenic and callogenic anthers. The percentage of responsive anthers was increased by low temperature stress (4 °C) and calcium pretreatments. The significant interactions were also observed between embryo induction media and cultivars. Chromosome counting on 30 androgenic plants showed that only one plant was haploid. This plant was obtained from anther culture in cultivar Paros by the use of H1 medium (2 mg l–1 IAA and 1 mg l–1 BA) and cold pretreatment.

The study of chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) parameters i.e.: Fo, Fm, Fv/Fm, Y, qP, qN, F’o, F’m was conducted in two strawberry cultivars ‘Honeoye’ and ‘Teresa’. Measurements of their values were done twice: in an early autumn and late spring. Fluorescence of five dark-adapted mature leaves derived from each cultivar was measured in the laboratory at room temperature with the use of a portable p...
full textEFFICACY OF RESISTANCE SELECTION TO VERTICILLIUM WILT IN STRAWBERRY (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) TISSUE CULTURE
The soil-borne pathogenic fungus Verticillium dahliae Kleb. causes economic losses in crops in temperate regions of the world and hence is the most studied species. Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) belongs to plant species susceptible to Verticillium dahliae, although the response to infection caused by this pathogen is varied and depends on the cultivar. Due to a lack of efficient method...

In vitro propagation of strawberry was conducted at the Biotechnology Lab. of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. For shoot induction, five BAP concentrations viz., 0.0 (Control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mg/l and for root induction four IBA concentrations viz., 0.0 (Control), 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mg/l were used. The highest average number of shoots (7) and the highest average length (3.34 cm) of shoot was ob...

In the present study, we investigated changes in chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic parameters and fruit yields, as well as fruit phytochemical accumulation of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) that had been cultivated in a greenhouse under different combinations of light intensity and temperature. In plants grown with low light (LL) photosystem II chlorophyll fluorescence was found to...
