Neuroprotective role of vitamin E, green tea extract, and spirulina in rats treated with cadmium chloride
Authors
Abstract:
Background & Aim: Spirulina (Spirulina plantesis) and Tea (Camellia sinensis) has a long history of use in folk medicine. Recently, They have been widely studied for their potential antioxidant properties. The present study investigated neuroprotective effect of Spirulina and green tea extract against Cadmium [Cd]-induced brain lesions and to compare these effects with neuroprotective effect of Vitamin E. Experimental: The rats were randomly divided into 5 groups and were treated with the following treatment for a period of 4 weeks. Control, CdCl2 alone, Vitamin E with CdCl2, Green tea extract with CdCl2, Spirulina solution with CdCl2. On the 29th day, animals were sacrificed humanely and their brains were placed in formalin. Hippocampus, caudate putamen, corpus callosum, cerebellum, and cerebrum were studied by light microscopy. Results: Neuronophagia, satellitosis of oligodendrocytes, hyperemia, hemorrhage, neuronal necrosis, central chromatolysis, neuronal atrophy, laminar necrosis, and status spongiosus were the observed changes. Thickness of granular layer and molecular layer of cerebellum and size/diametr of purkenje cells reduced when cadmium used alone at PRecommended applications/industries: The results shows Spirullina as excellent antioxidant source indicating its use possibly in combination with vitamin E and other antioxidant agent in order to prevent adverse effects of free radicals.

full textP-16: Effect of Vitamin E and Green Tea Extracts on Semen Quality and Oxidative Stress Parameters in Rat Exposed to Cadmium
Background: Cadmium is a potential pollutant of the environment. It manifests cyto-toxic effects in different organs in animals. In the testis, changes due to disruption of the blood-testis barrier and oxidative stress have been noted. Therefore, the present study was carried out to investigate the potential protective effects of vitamin E and green tea extract in combination against cadmium (C...
full textProtective Role of Vitamin E Against Cadmium Chloride Induced Testicular Damage in Rats
Cadmium is a most toxic heavy metal and an environmental pollutant. The present study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant role of vitamin E in cadmium chloride (Cdcl2) induced testicular toxicity in rats. .Male wistar albino rats (n=6/group) were divided into control group (saline injected), untreated experimental groups (Single dose of 1mg and 2mg/kg BW, intraperitonially), and pretreate...
full textEffect of green tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) extract on sperm health parameters in adult rats treated with Bisphenol A
Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) disturbs male reproductive system performance via the production of free radicals. Green tea extract (GTE) is known as a potent antioxidant. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of co-treatment of BPA and GTE as an antioxidant on male reproductive system performance. Methods: Adult male rats were divided into 4 groups: control, Bisphenol A...
full textEffects of green tea and vitamin E in the testicular tissue of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the possible therapeutic or protective effects of green tea in diabetic rat's testicular tissue, either as a single agent, or together with vitamin E. METHODS The present study was carried out at the Faculty of Medicine, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey from May to August 2011 for 10 weeks. Forty-eight adult male Wistar albino rats, weighting 250-300 g, were divided in...
