Abstract:

Neural Tube Defects, Folic Acid and Methylation

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are common complex congenital malformations resulting from failure of the neural tube closure during embryogenesis. It is established that folic acid supplementation decreases the prevalence of NTDs, which has led to national public health policies regarding folic acid. To date, animal studies have not provided sufficient information to establish the metabolic and/or ...

Folic acid and neural tube defects.

Major congenital anomalies occur in 2% to 3% of live births. Neural tube defects (NTDs), cleft lip and palate, and cardiac anomalies are some of the most common. NTDs are a group of serious birth defects that affect the developing nervous system and include anencephaly, spina bifida, and encephalocele. Birth records suggest that about 2500 babies with these birth defects, or 1 to 2 per 1000, ar...

Neural tube defects and periconceptional folic acid.

T he cause of neural tube defects (NTDs) is multi-factorial. The possibility that folic acid played a role was first reported in 1964. 1 Several clinical trials subsequently showed that the risk of recurrence and first occurrence of these abnormalities was decreased by peri-conceptional folic acid supplementation, 2–5 On the basis of these findings, supplementation of 400 µg folic acid was reco...

Folic acid supplementation influences the distribution of neural tube defect subtypes: A registry-based study.

Periconceptional folic acid (FA) reduces neural tube defect (NTD) risk, but seems to have a varying effect per NTD subtype. We aimed to study the effect of FA supplementation on NTD subtype distribution using data from EUROCAT Northern Netherlands. We included all birth types with non-syndromal NTDs born in 1997-2012. By Fisher's exact test we analyzed possible differences in NTD subtype distri...

Folic acid in the prevention of neural tube defect--a programme for Malaysia?

There is good evidence that folic acid is safe and efficacious for reducing neural tube defect (NTD). All women capable of becoming pregnant should take 400 microgram daily. This can be given in the form of a daily vitamin supplement, by food fortification, or by increasing natural dietary folates. Compulsory grain fortification has been shown to reduce NTD in a population but supplementation a...

QUESTION Now that flour and pasta have been fortified with folic acid in Canada, do I still need to recommend folic acid supplements to my patients who are of child-bearing age? If I should recommend supplements, when should I recommend them, and what is an appropriate dose? ANSWER Non-pregnant women should consume 400 microg of folic acid daily, and pregnant women should consume 600 microg o...
