Abstract:

Introduction: Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a rare, benign, and self-limiting inflammatory lesion that commonly involves minor salivary glands. It is theoretically associated with ischemia. It is commonly found in the palate, and laryngeal presentation is a very unusual entity. Almost half of such cases have an underlying malignancy; therefore, suspicion of a malignant lesion should be high when this entity is found at any laryngeal level. Case presentation: The present case was a 59-year-old male presenting a necrotizing sialometaplasia in the larynx, which obscured a malignancy, delaying the diagnosis until a positive metastatic cervical lymph node emerged. Conclusion: Necrotizing sialometaplasia is an extremely rare pathology at the larynx, with only five cases reported in the literature. The current case was the 6th to date. Almost half of such cases presented a malignancy beneath the lesion; therefore, it is crucial to perform a close follow-up in such patients.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia: a diagnostic dilemma.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign self-limiting lesion of both major and minor salivary glands although more commonly the latter. The clinical and histological similarity between this entity and a malignant lesion implies a risk of unnecessary radical treatment. We report a case of necrotizing sialometaplasia in middle aged women presenting as a non-ulcerated swelling. This case illustrat...

Necrotizing Sialometaplasia of Palate: A Case Report

Background. Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is an uncommon benign reactive necrotizing inflammatory process involving minor salivary gland that often mimics malignancy both clinically and histopathologically. Case Report. We report the case of a healthy 26-year-old man with a painless swelling in the hard palate near the middle raphe, asymptomatic, well limited, and raised edges. The patient w...

Necrotizing sialometaplasia of the palate

Necrotizing sialometaplasia is an uncommon inflammatory condition that affects salivary glands. A 38-year-old man with bilateral ulcerative painful lesions at the junction of the hard and soft palate was presented. An incisional biopsy was performed. Histopathologically, pseudoepithelomatous hyperplasia, lobular necrosis with through the maintenance of the architecture of salivary glands and sq...

Necrotizing sialometaplasia of palate: a case report

Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) which mimics malignancy both clinically and histopathologically is an uncommon benign, self-limiting inflammatory disease of the mucus-secreting minor salivary glands. The lesion is believed to be the result of vascular ischemia that may be initiated by trauma. Till date, the diagnosis of NS remains a challenge. This report demonstrates a case of NS in a 73-year...

Subacute necrotizing sialadenitis: a form of necrotizing sialometaplasia?

OBJECTIVES To report our experience of subacute necrotizing sialadenitis (SANS), an unusual lesion of the minor salivary palatal glands, and to discuss its relationship with necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS). DESIGN A retrospective review of records for patients with SANS identified between 1996 and 2001. SETTING Academic center, referral center, and an ambulatory care center. PATIENTS Thr...
