Mutagenicity Effect of Antimigrin Herbal Medicine

ABSTRACT The increasing use of medical herbs and their products and the proof of mutagenicity and oncogenicity of some of their components justify more researches about these effects of herb products. The objective of the present study is to explore the cytogenetic toxicity of a product currently available in Iranian drug market called Antimigrin. One of the methods used for the study of mutagenicity is chromosomal analysis during metaphase in order to observe different types of chromosomal aberrations such as chromatid breaks, dicentric chromosomes and polyploidies. In the present study peripheral blood lymphocytes cultured in RPMI- 1640 medium in the presence of a mitogenic agent, PHA, were exposed to different concentrations of the drug. The present results demonstrated that the antimigrin, significantly increased the frequency of aberrations compared with the controls.
