Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of D-Penicillamine in reducing lead induced morphometric changes in rat testis. Materials and Methods: Male adult rats were exposed to 0.4% lead acetate in drinking water for 8 weeks. After this period, 6 rats sacrificed and testes were removed to evaluate the effects of lead intoxication. The remained lead exposed rats were divided into two groups: one group received distilled water and the other group received 25-35 mg/kg/day of oral D-p treatment for six weeks, after one week of recovery. Testis morphometric changes were studied in H&E stained sections. Results: Width of germinal epithelium and number of sertoli cells were decreased after 8 weeks of lead intoxication (P<0.05). These parameters were still significantly lower than control group after both of recovery and treatment periods (P<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that subchronic oral lead intoxication induces some changes in adult testis which are not reversible even after D-P administration.

Comparative Effect of Silymarin and D-Penicillamine on Lead Induced Hemotoxicity and Oxidative Stress in Rat

Background: This study was performed to investigate the adverse effects of acute lead intoxication on hemogram, erythrocyte osmotic fragility and oxidant/antioxidant status and the probable ameliorating effect of silymarin in comparison to d-penicillamine. Methods: Forty-eight albino rats were divided in 8 groups and received the following treatments in a 10 day experiment in Shahid Chamran ...

Polymyositis complicating D-penicillamine treatment.

Although there is good evidence that D-penicillamine can induce polymyositis, the exact pathogenic mechanism remains unclear. We report two patients with psoriatic arthritis and primary biliary cirrhosis respectively, who developed polymyositis while receiving D-penicillamine treatment for their primary diseases. Whether D-penicillamine treatment was the sole cause of polymyositis or acted as a...

Effect of Lead Intoxication and D-Penicillamine Treatment on Hematological Indices in Rats Efectos de Intoxicación con Plomo y Tratamiento de D-Penicilamina en Índices Hematológicos en Ratas

Lead is a dangerous heavy metal which is widely spread in the environment. Lead content in the air, food and tap water has increased several folds during recent years due to extensive use of this metal in petrol, paints, battery and other industries (Tuormaa, 1995). Despite of attempts for reducing the exposure to this metal, there are still some reports of cases with severe lead toxicity (Hers...

Combined Effect of Ginger and Pumpkin Seed Extracts on Rat Testis and Serum Biochemical Parameters after Cyclophosphamide Treatment

Introduction: Cyclophosphamide is a chemotherapy drug with several side effects on various organs such as male reproductive system that can cause infertility. In this study, we assessed combined effect of ginger and pumpkin extractson rat testis after CP injection. Methods: Forty adult male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: The control group received intraperitoneal injection of ...
