Monetary Policy Cyclicality, Industrial Output and Economic Growth Interactions in Nigeria
Authors
Abstract:
T his paper examined whether monetary policy is acyclical, procyclical or countercyclical and the implications of the interaction of such cyclicality with industrial output on real economic growth in Nigeria. After determining the time series properties of the variables and based on conventional cyclicality measures, the fully modified ordinary least square method was used to examine the impact of monetary policy cyclicality and industry output on economic growth. Granger Causality test was used to examine the causal relationship between the monetary cyclicality and output growth. The results showed that monetary policy is countercyclical on economic growth in Nigeria. Monetary policy cyclicality had significant impact on economic growth and the causality test also indicated that monetary policy has a direct effect and indirect effect through industrial output growth on real economic growth in Nigeria. The findings are consistent with similar studies in other countries, and the policy implication of the results is that despite the recent doubt, monetary policy is still a potent stabilization policy that can be used to stimulate industrial-output growth and counter the recent downturn in real economic activities in Nigeria.

Institutional quality, the cyclicality of monetary policy and macroeconomic volatility
In contrast to industrialized countries, emerging market economies are characterized by proor acyclical monetary policies and high output volatility. This paper argues that those facts can be related to a long-run feature of the economy – namely, its institutional quality (IQL). The paper presents evidence that supports the link between an index of IQL (law and order, government stability, inve...
full textInvestigating the Asymmetric Relationship between Financial Instability, Monetary Policy and Economic Growth in Iran
This study investigated the asymmetric effects of financial instability shocks on economic growth and monetary policy shocks on financial instability in Iran. For this purpose, data 1991:3 to 2017:1 and nonlinear auto-regressive distributed lag (NARDL) approach has been used. For this purpose, three models have been estimated. In the first model, the asymmetric effects of fiscal instability shoc...

This paper aims to investigate the role of each aggregate spending component in the monetary policy transmission in Indonesia. It assesses the relative strength of the role of each spending component in the monetary policy transmission. In so doing, this study employs the contribution analysis, which is calculated based on the cumulative impulse response of each component of GDP to a monetary p...
full textMonetary Policy and Economic Growth under Money Illusion∗
Empirical and experimental evidence documents that money illusion is persistent and widespread. This paper incorporates money illusion into two stochastic continuous-time monetary models of endogenous growth. Motivated by psychology, we model an agent’s money illusion behavior by assuming that he maximizes nonstandard utility derived from both nominal and real quantities. Money illusion affects...
full textThe Output Gap and Optimal Monetary Policy
In a standard New Keynesian model, a discretionary and myopic central bank concerned with changes in the output gap and inßation will implement a monetary policy that replicates the optimal, timeless perspective, precommitment policy. By stabilizing output gap changes, the central bank imparts inertia into output and inßation that is absent under pure discretion. It is shown that even a fully o...
