Monetary Policies, Exchange Rate Pass-through and Prices in Asian Economies: A Long and Short-run Analysis
author
Abstract:
Abstract T he financial crisis in 2007-2008 has turned into the most far-reaching international financial and economic crisis since the Great Depression. Indeed, the crisis-affected Asian countries experienced varying degrees of changes in the exchange rate and prices following an initial shock of sharp depreciation of their currencies in the second half of 1997. Moreover, questions connected with the exchange rate regime have been an important part of understanding macroeconomic policies and outcomes in Asia. Thus, the objective of this paper is to examine pass-through effects on domestic prices among the four selected Asian countries, Japan and S. Korea from the east and Iran and Turkey from the west, with special emphasis on an interaction between prices, monetary policies and exchange rate changes. In order to take into account dynamic effects between these variables, the structural vector auto-regression (SVAR) method is employed, by which the responses of such shocked variables are evaluated during 1970- 2015. The empirical results confirmed a dynamic relationship between exchange rate pass-through and other macro variables in the selected countries. Also, the results have shown that the pass-through shocks in the short-run are more effective in the countries which benefit from a managed floating exchange rate regime and inflation targeting policy.

Monetary Policy, Exchange Rate Flexibility, and Exchange Rate Pass-Through
This paper develops a dynamic general-equilibrium (DGE) model of a small open economy to investigate alternative monetary rules, differing primarily in the degree to which they allow for exchange rate flexibility. A central argument of the paper is that the nature of the trade-off between fixed and floating exchange rates may be quite different in mature industrial economies than in emerging-ma...
full textInvestigating the Short- run and Long-run Causality Relationship between the Exchange Rate Regime and the Real Exchange Rate Misalignment in the OPEC Countries
Real exchange rate misalignment means that the real exchange rate deviates from its equilibrium level and is the cause of many domestic and global economic problems. This index is considered as an important indicator in foreign competition and in case of adopting an inappropriate exchange rate regime; it may create economic instability and affect economic performance. This issue is important in...
full textExchange Rate Pass-Through and Inflation in Dollarized Economies: Evidence from the Middle Eastern and North African Countries
T he investigation of exchange rate pass-through is an important issue in international finance. The relationship between exchange rate pass-through and exchange rate arrangements such as the dollarization regime has been examined in recent decades. For this purpose, the main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of exchange rate pass-through on the domestic inflation in selecte...
full textThe Monetary Exchange Rate Model as a Long-Run Phenomenon
Pure time series-based tests fail to nd empirical support for monetary exchange rate models. In this paper we apply pooled time series estimation on a forwardlooking monetary model, resulting in parameter estimates which are in compliance with the underlying theory. Based on a panel version of the Engle and Granger (1987) two-step procedure we nd that the residuals of our pooled estimated model...
full textEstimating Exchange Rate Pass-Through on Producer Prices in Main Sectors of Iranian Economy
Exchange rate changes could impact on prices. Whether exchange rate pass through to prices is complete or incomplete is an interesting question in analyzing impacts of exchange rate policy. An important aspect of exchange rate pass through is in producer price index and in its sub-indices. Our aim is to analyze the effects of exchange rate changes on producer sub-indices. To do that we have use...
