Molecular phylogeny of the family Araceae as inferred from the nuclear ribosomal ITS data
Authors
Abstract:
The internal transcribed spacer regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA are widely used to infer phylogenetic relationships in plants. In this study, it was obtained the ITS sequences from 24 samples of Araceae in Iran, representing 3 genera: Arum L., Biarum Schott. and Eminium (Blume) Schott. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted by Bayesian inference and maximum Parsimony methods. Cladistic analysis of ITS dataset indicated that all species constituted a monophyletic clade, with no major subclades with robust support. Eminium lehmani Bge., Eminium intortum Banks and Sol. and Eminium alberti Rgl. were considered as outgroups. Biarum and Arum species were placed in a monophyletic clade as sister groups and B. platyspatum Bornm., B. Carduchorum Schott., and B. straussi Engl. were grouped in a monophyletic clade. A. maculatum L., A. giganteum Ghahreman, Some populations of A. conophalloides Schott and A. virescense Stapf. were placed in cluster I. Some populations of A. virescence and A. conophalloides were placed in cluster II, A. kotschyi Boiss. and A. korolkowii L. were placed in cluster III. All these three clades had poor supports. Arum giganteum Ghahreman was introduced as new species in Iran, but in Arum monograph it is mentioned as potentially equivalent to Arum rupicola Boiss. The data obtained from the molecular studies in this research could separate these two species and confirmed previous studies.

Phylogeny and Biogeography of Tsuga (Pinaceae) Inferred from Nuclear Ribosomal ITS and Chloroplast DNA Sequence Data
Hemlock, Tsuga (Pinaceae), has a disjunct distribution in North America and Asia. To examine the biogeographic history of Tsuga, phylogenetic relationships among multiple accessions of all nine species were inferred using chloroplast DNA sequences and multiple cloned sequences of the nuclear ribosomal ITS region. Analysis of chloroplast and ITS sequences resolve a clade that includes the two we...
full textData Partitions, Bayesian Analysis and Phylogeny of the Zygomycetous Fungal Family Mortierellaceae, Inferred from Nuclear Ribosomal DNA Sequences
Although the fungal order Mortierellales constitutes one of the largest classical groups of Zygomycota, its phylogeny is poorly understood and no modern taxonomic revision is currently available. In the present study, 90 type and reference strains were used to infer a comprehensive phylogeny of Mortierellales from the sequence data of the complete ITS region and the LSU and SSU genes with a spe...
full textPhylogeny of Ononis in Iran using nuclear ribosomal DNA and chloroplast sequence data
The genus Ononis, embraces more than 85 species worldwide. In the present study, materials of two subspecies of O. spinosa from different localities of Iran alongside some other native species of the genus were included in phylogenetic analyses. In addition, over 50 accessions were obtained from GenBank. In order to clarify the exact number of subspecies of O. spinosa in Iran, datasets were obta...
full textThe Phylogeny of Calligonum and Pteropyrum (Polygonaceae) Based on Nuclear Ribosomal DNA ITS and Chloroplast trnL-F Sequences
This study represents phylogenetic analyses of two woody polygonaceous genera Calligonum and Pteropyrum using both chloroplast fragment (trnL-F) and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrDNA ITS) sequence data. All inferred phylogenies using parsimony and Bayesian methods showed that Calligonum and Pteropyrum are both monophyletic and closely related taxa. They have no affinity w...

Molecular phylogeny of Polyneoptera (Insecta) inferred from expanded mitogenomic data
The Polyneoptera represents one of the earliest insect radiations, comprising the majority of hemimetabolous orders, in which many species have great economic importance. Here, we sequenced eleven mitochondrial genomes of the polyneopteran insects by using high throughput pooled sequencing technology, and presented a phylogenetic reconstruction for this group based on expanded mitochondrial gen...
