Modeling Gold Volatility: Realized GARCH Approach

Authors

Abstract:

F orecasting the volatility of a financial asset has wide implications in finance. Conditional variance extracted from the GARCH framework could be a suitable proxy of financial asset volatility. Option pricing, portfolio optimization, and risk management are examples of implications of conditional variance forecasting. One of the most recent methods of volatility forecasting is Realized GARCH (RGARCH) that considers a simultaneous model for both realized volatility and conditional variance at the same time. In this article, we estimate conditional variance with GARCH, EGARCH, GIR-GARCH, and RGARCH with two realized volatility estimators using gold intraday data. We compared models, for in-sample fitting; by the log-likelihood value and used MSE and QLIKE lose functions to evaluate predicting accuracy. The results show that the RGARCH method for GOLD outperforms the other methods in both ways. So, using the RGARCH model in practical situations, like pricing and risk management would tend to better results.

Eco 2012/26 Department of Economics Exponential Garch Modeling with Realized Measures of Volatility

We introduce the Realized Exponential GARCH model that can utilize multiple realized volatility measures for the modeling of a return series. The model specifies the dynamic properties of both returns and realized measures, and is characterized by a flexible modeling of the dependence between returns and volatility. We apply the model to DJIA stocks and an exchange traded fund that tracks the S...

Modeling Liquidity Impact on Volatility: A GARCH-FunXL Approach

We introduce a new semiparametric model, GARCH with Functional EX ogeneous Liquidity (GARCH-FunXL), to capture the impact of liquidity, as implied by a stock exchange’s complete electronic limit order book (LOB), on asset price volatility. LOB-implied liquidity can be viewed as a functional rather than scalar or vectorial stochastic process. We adopt recent ideas from the functional data analys...

Realized GARCH: A Joint Model for Returns and Realized Measures of Volatility∗

We introduce a new framework, Realized GARCH, for the joint modeling of returns and realized measures of volatility. A key feature is a measurement equation that relates the realized measure to the conditional variance of returns. The measurement equation facilitates a simple modeling of the dependence between returns and future volatility. Realized GARCH models with a linear or log-linear spec...

Realized Volatility in Noisy Prices: a MSRV approach

Volatility is the primary measure of risk in modern finance and volatility estimation and inference has attracted substantial attention in the recent financial econometric literature, especially in high-frequency analyses. High-frequency prices carry a significant amount of noise. Therefore, there are two volatility components embedded in the returns constructed using high frequency prices: the...

Estimation of Monthly Volatility: An Empirical Comparison of Realized Volatility, GARCH and ACD-ICV Methods

We apply the ACD-ICV method proposed by Tse and Yang (2011) for the estimation of intraday volatility to estimate monthly volatility, and empirically compare this method against the realized volatility (RV) and generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) methods. Our Monte Carlo results show that the ACD-ICV method performs well against the other two methods. Evidence on t...

Efficient Semiparametric Garch Modeling of Financial Volatility

We consider a class of semiparametric GARCH models with additive autoregressive components linked together by a dynamic coefficient. We propose estimators for the additive components and the dynamic coefficient based on spline smoothing. The estimation procedure involves only a small number of least squares operations, thus it is computationally efficient. Under regularity conditions, the propo...
