Abstract:

Sediment flushing of reservoirs is an operational technique, whereby previously accumulated sediments in the reservoirs are hydraulically removed by accelerated flow when the bottom desiltingoutlets of the dam are opened. In this research, the process of sediment flushing is simulated by a three dimensional numerical model in which sediment and flow interaction are reflected in the reservoirs. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved numericallyby Finite Volume on a three dimensional grid and a standard k −e turbulence model is used. The resulting flow analysis is used as an input data for the sediment model. The convection diffusion equation for the sediment concentration is solved. The concentration equation derived by Van-Rijn is adopted as a boundary condition, resulting in a calculation of bed material load. The depth integrated mass balance equation is applied to find the bed changes. The results from the numerical model are compared favorably with the data from physical model studies availablein the literature.

Simulation of Reservoir Sediment Flushing of the Three Gorges Reservoir Using an Artificial Neural Network

Reservoir sedimentation and its effect on the environment are the most serious world-wide problems in water resources development and utilization today. As one of the largest water conservancy projects, the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) has been controversial since its demonstration period, and sedimentation is the major concern. Due to the complex physical mechanisms of water and sediment trans...

Estimating Sediment Flushing Efficiency of a Shaft Spillway Pipe and Bed Evolution in a Reservoir

Abstract: Control of reservoir sedimentation in order to ensure their sustainable use has drawn attention among water engineers and water resource managers. Several methods have been proposed, but most of the developed methodologies are incapable of modelling bed evolutions, while at the same time, compute sediment flushing efficiency. In this study a two-dimensional bed evolution model is prop...

Reservoir Desiltation Part Ii: a Review on Models and Geomorphological Effects of Flushing

The existing literature on resulting reservoir geomorphology after hydraulic reservoir flushings has been systematically examined and evaluated. The emphasis has been put on cross-sectional and longitudinal variations in geomorphology due to flushing, but also the available literature on physical models and analytical modeling and a short section on depositional processes are included as well.

Effects of a reservoir flushing on trace metal partitioning, speciation and benthic invertebrates in the floodplain.

Elimination of sediments from river reservoirs is a common management problem for hydroelectric power plants. Periodical flushing can have negative impacts downstream. This study investigated the impact of a flushing event on the physico-chemical changes in the downstream sections and on the consequences for the benthic macroinvertebrate community. A special emphasis was placed on trace metal f...

Comprehensive numerical simulations of sediment transport and flushing of a Peruvian reservoir

Numerical modeling of sediment transport in reservoirs, especially for sudden events such as flushing, is still a challenging research topic. In the present study, sediment transport and sediment flushing are simulated for a Peruvian reservoir. Situated in the Peruvian Andes, the watershed is affected by high erosion rates and the river carries high amounts of suspended sediment whose estimated...
