Comparison between the Polish population and European populations on the basis of mitochondrial morphs and haplogroups.

Polymorphisms in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were analyzed in 152 samples from the Polish population using restriction enzymes AvaI, BamHI, HaeII, HpaI and PstI. Additionally, each sample was classified into the appropriate haplogroup. When required, appropriate fragments were sequenced to establish the exact polymorphic sites. We found one new morph for PstI and six new morphs for AvaII. Some de...

Mitochondrial Haplogroups Define Two Phenotypes of Osteoarthritis

OBJECTIVE To assess a mitochondrion-related phenotype in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS Serum levels of the following OA-related biomarkers: matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1); MMP-3; MMP-13; myeloperoxidase (MPO); a peptide of the alpha-helical region of type II collagen, Coll2-1, and its nitrated form Coll2-1NO(2); a C-terminal neoepitope generated by the collagenase-mediated cl...

Role of Mitochondria in Ataxia-Telangiectasia: Investigation of Mitochondrial Deletions and Haplogroups

Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT) is a rare human neurodegenerative autosomal recessive multisystem disease that is characterized by a wide range of features including, progressive cerebellar ataxia with onset during infancy, occulocutaneous telangiectasia, susceptibility to neoplasia, occulomotor disturbances, chromosomal instability and growth and developmental abnormalities. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDN...

Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroups and Neurocognitive Impairment During HIV Infection.

BACKGROUND Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) remains an important complication in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Ancestry-related mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups have been associated with outcomes of HIV infection and combination antiretroviral therapy (CART), and with neurodegenerative diseases. We hypothesize that mtDNA haplogroups are associated with NCI in HIV...

Mitochondrial Haplogroups and Risk of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious and often fatal disease. It is a panvasculopathy of the pulmonary microcirculation characterized by vasoconstriction and arterial obstruction due to vascular proliferation and remodeling and ultimately right ventricular failure. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a universal finding in pulmonary vascular cells of patients with PAH, and is mechanistic...
