Microglia as a stem cell
Authors
Abstract:
Microglia is considered the only cell population of mesodermal origin, which comprises 10% of the cells in brain parenchyma. Recent neural stem cell (NSC) studies demonstrate that the brain has regenerative potential. NSCs do not give rise to microglial cells, however indicating that NSCs alone cannot complete the regenetion of the brain. Although the role of microglia is not fully understood, the recent study demonstrated that rat primary microglia cell expressed nestin, A2B5, and O4 antigens, which are markers for oligodendrocyte precursor cells. In our study, in purified primary cell culture microglia cells could be differentiated into other glial and neural cells.

Mesenchymal stem cells as a reference cell for HLA-typing
Introduction: Recognition of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) is of importance for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Any HLA-mismatches between the donor and recipient can cause graft rejection or other complications. In HLA-typing experiments, usage of HLA-known reference cells accompany with HLA-unknown samples is obligatory. Some international centers represent these cells with high e...
full textPerspectives of Stem Cell-Derived Microglia for Medicine
Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), are responsible for the innate brain immune defence. The exact origin of microglia is still unclear, but several reports suggest that microglia are of myeloid origin (Chan et al., 2007). They appear for the first time at an early embryonic state in the neuroepithelium and populate the brain from the blood in a second peri...
full textSTAT3 as a Key Factor in Tumor Microenvironment and Cancer Stem Cell
Background Recent studies revealed that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a decisive role in the regulation of tumor progression by manipulating tumor oncogenesis, angiogenesis and immune functions within tumor microenvironments. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), which is a point of convergence for numerous oncogenic signalling pathways, is constitutively activ...

chronic myeloid leukemia (cml) is a myeloproliferative disease of the hematopoietic stem cells, characterized by the presence of the philadelphia (ph) chromosome. although imatinib inhibits the bcr-abl kinase activity, clinical experiences confirm that imatinib may not target cml stem cells in vivo. the identification of signaling pathways responsible for the self-renewal properties of leukemic...
