Abstract:

Magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) is a micromachining process that uses magnetic field and magnetic abrasive particles to conduct the mechanism of material removal in micro-nanometer scales. In this paper, by an experimental method and statistical analysis, the effects of parameters like working gap, work-piece rotational speed and material removal mechanism (injection of abrasive slurry of Al2O3) in the MAF process, on the external surfaces of cylindrical pieces of stainless steel (AISI 440C)were investigated on surface roughness. To do the experiments, a mechanism was designed and constructed. The results of this research show that the working gap and work-piece rotational speedhave a significant effect on the improvement of the surface roughness. It has been indicated that in vitro surface roughness improved 20% as a result of the gap working of 2 mm, workpiece rotational speed of 355 rpm, using the injection of abrasive slurry of Al2O3.

Micro Laser Welding of AISI 430 Ferritic Stainless Steel: Mechanical Properties, Magnetic Characterization and Texture Evolution

In the present work, a high power Nd:YAG laser has been employed to weld AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel thin sheets. Optical microscopy was used to study the microstructural evolutions during laser welding. Tensile test and microhardness measurement were employed in order to investigate the mechanical behaviors of welds. Also, vibrational sample magnetometry was used for characterizing magne...

Parametric Optimization of Magnetic Abrasive Water Jet Machining Of AISI 52100 SteelUsing Grey Relational Analysis

Abrasive machining is one of the most non-conventional processes for finishing. It is widely used in industry to machine the materials like mild steel, aluminum, copper, titanium, glass, hard rock material, graphite, composite material, ceramics etc.Like in abrasive jet machining. This technique uses jet which contains abrasive material. Now a day water-magnetic abrasive machining is one of the...

Micro abrasion-corrosion of AISI 316L stainless steel

In this study, the synergistic effects of abrasion and corrosion on AISI 316L stainless steel have been investigated using a micro-abrasion test rig. A series of results from abrasioncorrosion tests conducted using the micro-abrasion rig are presented. AISI 316L stainless steel has been studied under both pure abrasion and abrasion-corrosion conditions simulated by either distilled water or 3.5...
