Medical Ethics Education for Military, Police and Security Forces

Abstract:
Background: Confidentiality is a core value in medicine and public health, yet, like other core values, it is not absolute. Medical ethics has typically allowed the breach of confidentiality when there is a credible threat of significant harm to an identifiable third party. Applied medical ethics may vary in cases related to military or civil environments in matter such as medical confidence, treatment acceptance or refusal, organ donation and different types of euthanasia. The main purpose of this article is to survey the different aspects of the subject in each of the mentioned fields. Material and methods: Ethical codes relating to various medical subjects and according to the enumerable principles of virtual ethics, deontology and utilitarianism were examined. The rights and responsibilities of the health care staff, patient and the patient’s relatives were analyzed with regard to the mentioned principles. Results: The health care staff and patients in military environments have rather different conditions and responsibilities in comparison to civilians. The necessity of carrying out their duties by the staff well requires and optimally organized and specific structure of ethical laws and professional codes. Conclusion: ensuring the health of the staff and their physical and mental stability I military establishment is essential in order to guarantee a high efficiency relating the responsibilities expected of such organization. A thoughtful and well managed charter od laws and ethical codes will ensure a high standard level of healthcare services provided by such organs.
