Low Cost UAV-based Remote Sensing for Autonomous Wildlife Monitoring
Authors
Abstract:
In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, lightweight on-board computers, and low-cost thermal imaging sensors offer a new opportunity for wildlife monitoring. In contrast with traditional methods now surveying endangered species to obtain population and location has become more cost-effective and least time-consuming. In this paper, a low-cost UAV-based remote sensing platform is introduced. It is a small, low-cost, flexible remote sensing platform, which was accomplished object detection, classification, and measures the accurate GPS coordinates of animals in wild or agriculture areas. The paper describes both hardware and software architecture of a UAV such as thermal image sensor, an RGB camera, on-board computer, object detection, and recognition algorithms. While flying the onboard computer run a developed program to achieve real-time detection and path planning. The proposed system proved to be capable of detecting 83% of animals with a spatial accuracy of 2.17 meters.

Low Cost Web Based Remote Monitoring and Controlling Systems
An Embedded System is a special-purpose computer system designed to perform one or a few dedicated functions, often with real-time computing constraints. It is usually embedded as part of a complete device including hardware and mechanical parts. In contrast, a general-purpose computer, such as a personal computer, can do many different tasks depending on programming. Embedded systems have beco...
full textA Low-Cost Optical Remote Sensing Application for Glacier Deformation Monitoring in an Alpine Environment
In this work, we present the results of a low-cost optical monitoring station designed for monitoring the kinematics of glaciers in an Alpine environment. We developed a complete hardware/software data acquisition and processing chain that automatically acquires, stores and co-registers images. The system was installed in September 2013 to monitor the evolution of the Planpincieux glacier, with...

full textA Low Cost Remote Cardiac Monitoring Framework for Rural Regions
Cardiovascular diseases in rural developing countries take a large toll of human lives, due to inadequate quality health care facilities and their limited reach to the patients. The burgeoning population of developing nations make the linear organic scaling of health care facilities impractical to cater the diverse rural geography. Hence it is imperative to scale the health care facilities thro...
full textLow-cost Analog Optical Link for Environmental Electromagnetic Remote Monitoring
Different types of low cost analog optical links for EMF environmental monitoring are proposed. These links can be used for RF and microwave antenna remoting, to transmit the spectral information from a generic sensor to the receiver, with a very large bandwidth, extending from 100 kHz to 2.5 GHz to cover the principal telecommunication services. Some of the designed links have been manufacture...
full textRadar-based remote sensing monitoring of roads
This paper provides a brief description of two powerful radar-based remote sensing techniques to monitor the deformations of roads, their associated infrastructures and, more in general, their surroundings. The first technique is the satellite radar interferometric technique. In this work a specific technique, named Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI), is considered. This technique has wi...
