Abstract:

One of the important issues in hydraulic engineering is inspection of local scour depth around bridge pier. Using piles is one of the ways for confronting local scour and erosion. In this study, the experiments were conducted in an 8m long, 0.5m deep and 0.25m wide flume. And the effectof using piles and number of them observed on the amount of scour in three different Frude numbers. The shape of the pier was a rectangle cube with 5cm long and 2.5cm wide. The diameter of the piles was 6mm, and piles were non-submerged. The results of experiments indicatedthat the use of different number of piles in three different Frude number, (0.214, 0.237, 0.297), reduced volume and depth of scour highly. It is observed that 3 and 4 piles in each three Fr number, (0.214, 0.237, 0.297), had better results in comparing with 2 and 5 piles. And also the lowest amount of scour and the highest efficiency were related to Fr number of 0.214, so the maximum scour depth and volume were reduced by 76% and 92% respectively in comparison with the pierwithout sacrificial piles. While these amounts in the Fr number of 0.237 were 88% and 66% respectively and in the Fr number of 0.237 were 88% and 52% respectively.

Experimental comparison of sacrificial piles and submerged vanes as scour countermeasures around bridge pier

An experimental study has been conducted on the effectiveness of two types of flow-altering countermeasures placed around a cylindrical pier under clear water condition, which include sacrificial piles and submerged vanes. Their arrangements follow the optimal configurations recommended in the published articles with some modification. The temporal evolution of maximum scour depth and its equil...

Time Development of Local Scour around Semi Integral Bridge Piers and Piles in Malaysia

Scouring around a bridge pier is a complex phenomenon. More laboratory experiments are required to understand the scour mechanism. This paper focused on time development of local scour around piers and piles in semi integral bridges. Laboratory data collected at Hydraulics Laboratory, University of Malaya was analyzed for this purpose. Tests were performed with two different uniform sediment si...

Control of Scour Around the Piles with Using Cable and Collar at the River

In this study, in order to examine the joint of the cable and the collar in control of scour around the bridge piles, experiments were carried out in a rectangular plexiglass flume as a direct path. The experiments were carried out using three different cable diameters, three different thread angles and three rounds of the cable threaded at a steady current in clear water. The results of this s...

scour modeling piles of kambuzia industrial city bridge using hec-ras and artificial neural network

today, scouring is one of the important topics in the river and coastal engineering so that the most destruction in the bridges is occurred due to this phenomenon. whereas the bridges are assumed as the most important connecting structures in the communications roads in the country and their importance is doubled while floodwater, thus exact design and maintenance thereof is very crucial. f...

laboratory investigation of performance of l-shaped collar on reduction of local scour around bridge abutment

scour around bridge piers is one of the most important fields of hydraulic research. local scour around bridge piers and abutment is one of the main reasons of bridge failures. in the field of scour at the bridges, researches are more focus on scour of piers in compare with abutment. while the available information on the bridge failures required cost, the major problems are related to abutment...
