از قدیم ترین ایام و در هر فرهنگی، جذام همواره چشم اندازی از وحشت و افسون بوده است. در هیچ مورد دیگری، بیمار را زنده به گور نکرده اند، او را بسته بر ستون نسوزانده اند و یا با زنگوله و شمعی در دست ، از شهرها اخراج نکرده اند. بدآموزیها، ترس، جهل و اعتقادات خرافی موجب شده است که جذام بیش از هر بلای دیگری، در میان مردم وحشت و هراس ایجاد کند.
