Abstract:

Seventeen patients with polycystic ovarian disease (peOD) were treated by laparoscopic ovarian electrocauterization (LEC). Ten were admitted to hospital for infertility, four for hirsutism, two for severe scalp hair loss, and one for abnormal uterine bleeding. Four of the patients were virgins. We had 50% (5 of 10) pregnancies and 88% (15 of 17) showing a decline in testosterone levels after this operation. 87% of the patients showed regularity in menstruation. 80% (8 of 10) of infertile patients ovulated after LEe. We think the use of LEe for the treatment of severe scalp hair loss and in virginal peo patients are new ideas in our article. The rate of pelvic adhesion after LEe was 0% in our series. A 6-to-24 month follow-up showed that many of these patients had normal clinical and laboratory findings.

Comparison of 5-, 10-, and 15-Point Laparoscopic Ovarian Electrocauterization in Patients With Polycystic Ovarian Disease: a Prospective, Randomized Study

OBJECTIVE We compared 12-month pregnancy and live birth rates in patients with polycystic ovarian disease undergoing 5-, 10-, and 15-point laparoscopic ovarian electrocauterization. METHODS This was a prospective, randomized study performed at the Dabirashrafi Fertility and Endoscopy Research Center, Tehran, Iran. The study included 187 patients with polycystic ovarian disease who were random...

Harmonic Scalpel versus Monopolar Electrocauterization in Cholecystectomy

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) using surgical electrocautery is considered to be the gold standard procedure for the treatment of uncomplicated cholecystitis and cholelithiasis. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the Harmonic scalpel, an advanced laparoscopic technique associated with less thermal damage in LC, when co...

Vasopressin Effect on Operation Time and Frequency of Electrocauterization during Laparoscopic Stripping of Ovarian Endometriomas: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess the vasopressin effect on operation time and the need for electrocauterization frequency and ovarian reserve during laparoscopic stripping of ovarian endometriomas. METHODS This was a randomized prospective clinical trial, in which twenty patients between 18-35 years with unilateral endometriomas were randomly divided in two groups of cases a...

Caenorhabditis elegans galectins LEC-1-LEC-11: structural features and sugar-binding properties.

Galectins form a large family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins in metazoa and fungi. This report presents a comparative study of the functions of potential galectin genes found in the genome database of Caenorhabditis elegans. We isolated full-length cDNAs of eight potential galectin genes (lec-2-5 and 8-11) from a lambdaZAP cDNA library. Among them, lec-2-5 were found to encode 31-35-kDa p...
