Klotho as a Novel Cardioprotective Protein in Aged Heart
Authors
Abstract:
In recent years, researchers have been looking for genes whose products can directly affect the aging process. Among these, the anti-aging protein klotho has attracted much attention. This single transmembrane protein is expressed in the renal tissues, parathyroid gland and choroid network of the brain and acts as a co-receptor for Fibroblast Growth Factor FGF. In this way, it contributes to calcium and phosphate homeostasis, which is in fact the classical function of this protein. The second extracellular protein of this protein can be released from cell surface by ectodomain shedding and get secreted into the blood, which, in turn, as an “endocrine factor”, affects the body in many ways.

Klotho Mice: A Novel Wound Model of Aged Skin
BACKGROUND As the elderly population continues to expand, it becomes increasingly important to develop treatments to improve wound healing in the elderly. One problem limiting the research is the lack of appropriate animal models for wound healing in elderly patients. We hypothesized that the Klotho mouse of premature aging is a suitable animal model to shed light on many of the biological proc...
full textKlotho Protein,A Biomarker for AKI
Klotho is an anti-aging single-pass membrane protein that is mainly produced in the kidney. The level of soluble klotho decreases with age and the klotho gene is associated with an increased risk of age-related diseases, such as diabetes, skin atrophy, chronic kidney disease, ataxia and cancer. The klotho gene is composed of five exons and encodes a membrane glycoprotein located in the plasma ...
full textSoluble Klotho protein as a novel serum biomarker in patients with acromegaly
Acromegaly is a chronic disease caused by overproduction of growth hormone, in most cases due to excessive secretion from a pituitary ad-enoma [1, 2]. The incidence of acromegaly is approximately 5 cases per million per year, and the prevalence is estimated to be about 60 cases per million [3]. Growth hormone (GH) induces the synthesis of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which leads to sev...

full textSkeletal muscle as a regulator of the longevity protein, Klotho
Klotho is a powerful longevity protein that has been linked to the prevention of muscle atrophy, osteopenia, and cardiovascular disease. Similar anti-aging effects have also been ascribed to exercise and physical activity. While an association between muscle function and Klotho expression has been previously suggested from longitudinal cohort studies, a direct relationship between circulating K...
full textSmall-molecule Klotho enhancers as novel treatment of neurodegeneration.
The majority of neurodegenerative diseases have an important age component, and thus, understanding the molecular changes that occur during normal aging of the brain is of utmost relevance. In search for the basis of the age-related cognitive decline found in humans, monkeys and rodents, we study the rhesus monkey. Surprisingly, there is no loss of neurons in aged monkey brains. However, we rep...
