Cell morphology of a human diploid cell strain (WI-38) after treatment with arabinosylcytosine.
Cell morphology was studied in a human diploid cell strain (WI-38) treated with various concentrations of arabinosylcytosine for different periods. Mitotic inhibition followed most of these treatments except for the short treatments with the lowest con centration, which allowed mitosis in the postreatment growth period. Paired acentric fragments were seen in anaphases after these treatments. Th...
full textThe effect of insulin on the growth and metabolism of the human diploid cell, WI-38.
In a confluent culture of WI-38 cells the membrane area available for nutrient uptake is greatly reduced and the possibility exists that this reduction in uptake capacity of the cell is a contributory factor in contact inhibition. Insulin has been reported by many authors to facilitate glucose uptake and also to stimulate protein, DNA and RNA synthesis, glycolysis, pinocytosis and growth in cul...
full textGrowth of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus in human diploid cell strain WI-38.
We demonstrated that Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus replicated in and adapted rapidly to human diploid cell strain WI-38. Peak titers of approximately 10(9.8) mouse intracerebral 50% lethal doses were obtained at low passage levels in Eagles basal medium supplemented with calf serum. VEE virus replicated poorly in serum-free medium. Propagation of VEE virus was accompanied by t...
