Abstract:

Nocardia are gram-positive and partially acid-fast bacteria with saprophytic lives in the environment. These groups of bacteria are able to enter the human body through traumatic inhalation and may consequently cause Nocardiosis infections. Case Presentation: A 32-year-old man was referred to Al-Zahra Hospital with symptoms such as fever, gradual weight loss, and persistent coughing. First, the patient was speculated to have Tuberculosis, but Mycobacterium tuberculosis was not isolated in any sputum samples. Ultimately, a broncho-alveolar lavage sample was acquired from the patient and according to the patient's clinical presentation and microbial assessments, the cause of illness was found to be Nocardia cyriacigeorgica. Conclusion: According to this report, Nocardiosis infections may occur in immune-compromised patients and even healthy individuals. Given the similarities between the clinical manifestations and radiological findings of Tuberculosis and Nocardia pulmonary infections, medical laboratories should identify Nocardial infections in suspected TB patients.

[Brain abscess due to Nocardia cyriacigeorgica simulating an ischemic stroke].

Nocardia spp. are bacteria often implicated in pulmonary diseases and central nervous system infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. We report here the case of an immunocompromised woman presenting an insidious brain abcess initially treated as a cerebral stroke. Despite a cotrimoxazole and rifampicin treatment she did not improve. She died 3 month later after she stopped her trea...

Molecular identification and thermoresistance to boiling of Nocardia farcinica and Nocardia cyriacigeorgica from bovine bulk tank milk

Two strains of Nocardia spp. were isolated from bovine milk of two individual bulk tank. Molecular identification classified the strains as Nocardia farcinica and Nocardia cyriacigeorgica. The thermorresistance to boiling of the isolates was carried out and was observed bacterial growth after boiling. Our findings indicate the potential risk of pathogen transmission to humans through contaminat...

First Report of the Isolation of Nocardia thailandica from the Bronchoalveolar Lavage of a Patient in Iran

Nocardiae are Gram-positive, filamentous, aerobic, relatively slow-growing, and weakly acid-fast bacteria which cause nocardiosis in humans. We describe a 53-year-old patient with chronic bronchitis referred to Al-Zahra Hospital, Isfahan. A bronchial washing sample was taken from the patient. A Nocardia-like microorganism was detected in microscopic evaluation. Based on the phenotypic and 16S r...

Rhodococcus equi isolation from sputum of patients with suspected tuberculosis.

Rhodococcus equi has emerged as an opportunistic pathogen associated with pulmonary, invasive or systemic infections in immunocompromised patients. We report the identification of 51 R. equi isolates found in sputum samples of 546 individuals suspected to have pulmonary tuberculosis in two Public Health Hospital Units in Brazil. The epidemiology of R. equi infection as well as the phenotypic id...
