Investigation of the Progressive Collapse Potential in Steel Buildings with Composite Floor System
Authors
Abstract:
Abnormal loads due to natural events, implementation errors and some other issues can lead to occurrence of progressive collapse in structures. Most of the past researches consist of 2- Dimensional (2D) models of steel frames without consideration of the floor system effects, which reduces the accuracy of the modeling. While employing a 3-Dimensional (3D) model and modeling the concrete slab system for the floors have a crucial role in the progressive collapse evaluation. In this research, a 3D finite element model of a 5-story steel building is modeled by the ABAQUS software once with modeling the slabs, and the next time without considering them. Then, the progressive collapse potential is evaluated. The results of the analyses indicate that the lack of the consideration of the slabs during the analyses, can lead to inaccuracy in assessing the progressive failure potential of the structure. The results show that a structure is subjected to unusual external loads such as a motor vehicle collision, explosion of a bomb in a vehicle, etc., the most critical columns are located in the nearest frame to the outer frame in the structure.

Numerical Evaluation of Progressive Collapse Potential in Reinforced Concrete Buildings with Various Floor Plans Due to Single Column Removal
Progressive collapse is defined as the spread of an initial damage from one member to another, leading to extensive partial or total collapse of the structure. In this research, the potential of progressive collapse due to a sudden removal of vertical load-bearing elements in reinforced concrete buildings structures with different floor plans such as geometrical regular and irregular floor plan...
full textA Parametric Study on the Progressive Collapse Potential of Steel Buildings under Truck Collision
In this paper, the initiation and propagation of structural damage in a building due to the truck collision to one of its corner columns were investigated. For this purpose, a three-dimensional 4-story moment resisting steel frame with intermediate ductility was considered. The structure was designed using ETABS software under standard dead, live, and earthquake loads, and then impact loading w...
full textEffect of Initial Local Failure Type on Steel Braced Frame Buildings against Progressive Collapse
In many studies, the alternative load path method (APM) has been used for progressive collapse analysis. In this method, one or several columns of the building are removed and the building response is investigated. This method ignores the initial local failure cause of building and this can affect the structural response. Investigation of ignoring the initial local failure cause of steel braced...

Analysis Procedures For Progressive Collapse of Buildings
This paper presents simple analytical approaches for evaluating progressive collapse potential of lowand mid-rise buildings that could be used in routine design by design professionals. Although nonlinear time history analysis would be more realistic in representing progressive collapse phenomenon, high fidelity structural models to represent nonlinear structural behavior are required to produc...
