Investigation of the operation of Thick Gas Electron Multiplier and Electron Multiplier Assembly for alpha particle detection

author

Abstract:

In this study, the detection of alpha particles in the high current mode is investigated in the presence of two gaseous electron multipliers in the micro-pattern structures. Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (TGEM) and an Electron Multiplier Assemblies (EMA) were designed and constructed as amplification gap in the detector chamber. An ion chamber is employed to measure the current of interaction between alpha particle and quenching gas. The appearance of visible light columns in the space between the multiplier electrodes at the location of input particles is one of the advantages of using this optical method to detect ionizing radiations.

Imaging with the gas electron multiplier

The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM), introduced several years ago, is finding numerous applications thanks to its excellent performances in detecting and localizing ionizing radiation. This note summarizes recent developments of the technology, and presents some examples of applications. r 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 29.40.Cs; 29.40.Gx

Toward Application of a Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM) Readout for a Dark Matter Detector

The Yale-Weizmann collaboration aims to develop a lowradioactivity (low-background) cryogenic noble liquid detector for Dark-Matter (DM) search in measurements to be performed deep underground as for example carried out by the XENON collaboration. A major issue is the background induced by natural radioactivity of present-detector components including the Photo Multiplier Tubes (PMT) made from ...

Single photoelectron detection with a low-pressure gas electron multiplier coupled to a CsI photocathode

We have operated the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) coupled to a CsI photocathode for the detection of single UV photons. Gains of up to 10 000 were observed with a single GEM in pure hydrocarbons in the range 40}400 Torr. Using a double-GEM structure, we have detected single photoelectrons on a strip electrode. We have studied the single-electron detection e$ciency of the GEM, a crucial paramet...

Photo-Electron Multiplier on the Basis of Multilayered Semiconductor Structure

In the paper, a new physical principle for designing of a new optoelectronic device and its theoretical description are presented. The basic idea of the device consists in providing inside a multilayered semiconductor structure such conditions for photoelectrons that enable sequential avalanche multiplication of electrons and holes inside two depletion slabs created around p-n junctions of a re...
