Investigation of physical penumbra definition in IMRT applications
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Because of small size of the beamlets in IMRT, physical penumbra is one of the important dosimetric parameters and small changes in the penumbra will have a great impact on the results. The physical penumbra width is defined as the lateral distance between two specified isodose curves at a specified depth of phantom. In this study, after demonstrating the inconsistency of conventional physical penumbra definition for non-uniform MLC fields, two new dosimetric parameters proposed, those are intended to be suitable for MLC fields Materials and Methods: Physical penumbra evaluation was obtained using IAEA phase space data for a Varian IX and EGSnrc Monte Carlo code package. The homogenous water phantom is located at SSD=100 cm. Results: With conventional definition, physical penumbra widths for all MLC setups on right and left sides of isodose curves (parallel to X and Y axes) are not equal. With the proposed dosimetric parameters, the effect of MLC setup is taken into consideration. Conclusion: The intended purpose from physical penumbra in its conventional definition is not satisfied for non-uniform MLC setups. For such cases, the newly defined surface penumbra and uniformity index are demonstrated to be more suitable and indicative of the field non-uniformity. It is also shown that for an idle treatment planning system, the uniformity index approaches unity.

the present study aimed to investigate representation of discourse markers and metadiscourse markers in conversations and readings of general elt coursebook series used in the language centers of iran. to this aim, four elt coursebooks popularly taught in language centers of this country were analyzed based on fung and carter’s (2007) framework regarding discourse markers and hyland’s (2005) fr...
Physical and dosimetric characteristic of high‐definition multileaf collimator (HDMLC) for SRS and IMRT
Physical and dosimetric characteristics of HDMLC were studied for SRS6, 6, and 10 MV X-rays from Novalis Tx. This in-built tertiary collimator consists of 60 pairs (32 × 0.25 cm; 26 × 0.5 cm and 2 × 0.7 cm) of leaves. Properties of HDMLC studied included alignment, readout and radiation field congruence, radiation penumbra, accuracy and reproducibility of leaf position and gap width, static and...

an investigation into iranian teachers consistency and bias in evaluation of students writings
while performance-based language assessment has led to an increased authenticity and content validity in the practice of writing assessment, the reliability of ratings has become a major issue. research findings have shown different reactions by native english speaker (nes) and non-native english speaker (nns) teachers to students’ writings. the focus of this study is on investigating whether i...
