Investigating the Effect of Rainfall Spatial Distribution on Flood in Bakhtiari Dam Basin Using HEC-HMS

author

Abstract:

The disparate spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall in the country and climate variation sometimes leads to rivers flooding and large flood events, which are remarkable for life and financial losses. Flood control design requires accurate knowledge of the flood generator basin, especially smaller ones, in large basins. Determining the potential of flood generation to specify the quantitative contribution of each subbasin to the downstream flood generation can be used to determine the index called the flood index of each subbasin. In this research, the effect of rainfall spatial distribution of critical rainfall on the flood potential of the Bakhtiari dam basin was analyzed using HEC-HMS model. The results showed that the effect of spatial distribution of rainfall on the flood index is significant, especially when faced with larger events with more subbasins with more area. On the other hand, the priority of participation of each subbasin in routing on the peak discharge from the basin and eventually on the flood index will be effective. Increasing the depth of rainfall in subbasins with less time of concentration has more effect on the flood index. Different spatial distributions have less effect on flood index in subbasins with the higher time of concentration and area. The results also showed that if the effect of the spatial distribution was not considered, the flood index decreases with increasing the subbasin area.

Spatial Analysis of Flood Hazard in Nirchay River Basin Using HEC-HMS Model and and fuzzy logic

Floods are one of the most abundant and destructive natural disasters that every year are caused heavy losses of life and property. Due to human activity in river systems and construction in rivers, flood damage has an upward trend. One of the most important actions to reduce flood damage is the provision of flood hazard zoning maps and their use in spatial planning. In this study, the risk of ...

Regional scale flood modeling using NEXRAD rainfall, GIS, and HEC-HMS/RAS: a case study for the San Antonio River Basin Summer 2002 storm event.

This paper develops a framework for regional scale flood modeling that integrates NEXRAD Level III rainfall, GIS, and a hydrological model (HEC-HMS/RAS). The San Antonio River Basin (about 4000 square miles, 10,000 km2) in Central Texas, USA, is the domain of the study because it is a region subject to frequent occurrences of severe flash flooding. A major flood in the summer of 2002 is chosen ...

Comparative Study of HEC-HMS Rainfall-Runoff Model with Different Experimental Methods of Flood Estimation

The most important problem in estimating floods is the lack of sufficient statistics and consequently the lack of evaluation of the appropriate amount of flow. One of the flood estimation methods in these basins is the use of hydrological modeling. In this study, Shahbahram river flood modeling was performed with Nazmkan hydrometric station located in Kohkiluyeh Boyer-Ahmad province with HEC-HM...

Simulation of Design Flood Hydrographs in Aydooghmush Basin with HEC-HMS Model

Hydrological models for evaluating and predicting the amount of available water in basins, flood frequency analysis, and developing strategies to deal with destructive floods are expanding daily. In this study, HEC-GeoHMS and Arc Hydro extensions in ArcGIS software and the HEC-HMS model were used to simulate design flood hydrographs in the Aydooghmush basin in the northwest of Iran. SCS-CN, SCS...

Simulation of rainfall temporal distribution pattern using WRF Model (case study of Parsian dam basin)

During the rainfall, the intensity of precipitation varies. Changes in the amount of precipitation during an event of rainfall are effective in the resulting of flood and its intensity. Knowledge of how rainfall changes over time during rainfall is determined by temporal distribution pattern of rainfall. For this purpose, availability of short-term time scales rainfalls data are important that ...
