INTESTINAL ZINC ABSORPTION IN DESFERROXAMINE-TREATED RATS
Authors
Abstract:
Desferroxamine (Desferal) is used tochelate iron in thalassemia, a disease of very high prevalence in various parts of lran. We have investigated intestinal zinc absorption in Desferal-treated rats which, in pilot experiments, showed low serum levels of both iron and zinc. Intraperitoneal administration of ten 0.5 g doses of Desferal (one injection every other day) to male rats produced severe iron deficiency accompanied by lower plasma zinc levels. An oral dose of 0.4 mg zinc sulfate, given to Desferal-treated rats, resulted in a higher increase in mucosal zinc absorption after 2 hours compared to normal controls. Similar results were obtained when the oral dose contained 0.4 mg each of ferrous sulfate and zinc sulfate. This suggests that the presence of iron has no effect on intestinal zinc absorption with the dose employed in this study. Zinc absorption increased with an oral zinc dose given to normal rats while iron absorption did not increase with an oral iron plus zinc dose given to normal rats, suggesting the absence of a regulatory mechanism for zinc absorption, similar to the one known to exist for iron absorption.

full textEffects of prenatal or postnatal ethanol consumption on zinc intestinal absorption and excretion in rats.
AIMS The effect of ethanol consumption, either during the pregnancy or lactation period, on the altered metabolism of zinc is not well-defined; consequently, this study was performed to analyze the effect of chronic ethanol exposure on milk consumption, serum, milk, duodenal absorption, fecal and urinary excretion of zinc in dams and offspring during either gestation or lactation in the rat. A ...
full textZinc absorption and intestinal losses of endogenous zinc in young Chinese women with marginal zinc intakes.
The objective of this study was to determine fractional absorption of exogenous zinc and intestinal excretion of endogenous zinc in women of childbearing age whose habitual dietary zinc intake was marginal. The target population (L group) comprised residents of a remote farming village in northeast China and the control subjects (M group) were residents of Beijing. Mean (+/-SE) calculated dieta...
full textStudies on intestinal absorption of sulpiride (3): intestinal absorption of sulpiride in rats.
The aim of this study was to investigate whether the concomitant administration of the substrates or inhibitors of PEPT1, OCTN1, OCTN2, and P-glycoprotein affects the intestinal absorption of sulpiride in rats. The absorption of sulpiride from rat intestine was decreased by the substrates or inhibitors of PEPT1, OCTN1, and OCTN2. On the other hand, the absorption was increased by the substrates...
full textZinc treatment ameliorates diarrhea and intestinal inflammation in undernourished rats
BACKGROUND WHO guidelines recommend zinc supplementation as a key adjunct therapy for childhood diarrhea in developing countries, however zinc's anti-diarrheal effects remain only partially understood. Recently, it has been recognized that low-grade inflammation may influence stunting. In this study, we examined whether oral zinc supplementation could improve weight, intestinal inflammation, an...
full textHydroxycitric acid delays intestinal glucose absorption in rats.
In this study, we investigated in rats if hydroxycitric acid (HCA) reduces the postprandial glucose response by affecting gastric emptying or intestinal glucose absorption. We compared the effect of regulator HCA (310 mg/kg) and vehicle (control) on the glucose response after an intragastric or intraduodenal glucose load to investigate the role of altered gastric emptying. Steele's one-compartm...
