Abstract:

Interference in clinical laboratory testing can create discrepancies in test results which can lead to patient harm.  In clinical chemistry, interference is defined as a cause of medically significant difference in the measurand test result due to another component or property of the sample. Interference by endogenous and exogenous substances with assays for clinical analytes is a common problem in laboratory medicine.  There are four major endogenous compounds that con- sistently interfere with laboratory results: hemoglobin, bilirubin, lipids, and paraproteins. The major exogenous sources of interference are drugs prescribed for the patient; We recommend determining whether the interference is dependent or independent of the analyte for the assay. Further, we propose an approach to the identification and resolution of an interference problem for the clinical.

Protocol for the study of drug interferences in laboratory tests: cefotaxime interference in 24 clinical tests.

We developed a protocol to study interference by cefotaxime and one of its major metabolites with 24 common chemical tests. Serum pools simulating specimens from healthy adults of both sexes, pregnant women, patients with liver disease, cardiac disease, or renal disease, and patients receiving gentamicin and tobramycin were supplemented with high and low concentrations of cefotaxime and desacet...

Understanding Avian Laboratory Tests

Because the hands-on examination can be much less revealing in birds than in other animals, clinical pathology (laboratory testing) plays an important part in the avian physical examination. A comprehensive physical examination should include a complete blood count (CBC), a fecal examination, and a choanal or oropharyngeal smear. Some veterinarians also include cloacal and choanal cultures, blo...

Laboratory tests: automatic systems

A laboratory is a sheltered place where one constrains the enthusiastic abandon of the real world in order to attempt to lay the blame for one apparently capricious phenomenon upon another. The extraordinary difficulties experienced in all areas of science when designing experiments testify to the complexity of the interactions between natural phenomena. Experiments are concerned with relations...

Frequency and causes of lipemia interference of clinical chemistry laboratory tests

OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to identify the causes of severe lipemia in an academic medical center patient population and to determine the relationship between lipemia and hemolysis. DESIGN AND METHODS Retrospective study was done on the data from the core clinical laboratory at an academic medical center. Lipemic indices were available for all chemistry specimens analyzed over a 1...

Hemolysis index to detect degree of hydroxocobalamin interference with common laboratory tests.

BACKGROUND Cyanokit® (hydroxocobalamin OHCo) is the recommended treatment for cyanide poisoning. OHCo is a red chromophore and may cause interference with some biochemical measurements. In this study, we assessed the possible interference of Cyanokit on several cooximetric and plasma biochemistry tests and then determined the possible mathematical correction for some analytes. We studied the po...
