Improving the Transient Stability of Power Systems Using STATCOM and Controlling it by Honey Bee Mating Optimization Algorithm

Authors

Abstract:

In this study, a new method for designing the damping controller was proposed to improve the transient power system stability in a single machine network connected to an infinite bus. The STATCOM controller problem in a wide area of the system function was considered as an optimization problem with multi-purpose objective function. Also, the Honey Bee Mating Optimization Algorithm was used to determine its parameters. In this paper, a new method for designing a damping controller was presented to improve the transient power system stability in a single machine network connected to an infinite bus. The STATCOM controller design problem in a wide area of system function was considered as an optimization problem with a multi-purpose objective function and the honey bee mating optimization algorithm was used to determine its parameters. As shown, STATCOM improved system stability. For a more comprehensive analysis, the results were tested in three different scenarios. Simulation of the STATCOM controller design for small signal stability was conducted in the MATLAB / SIMULINK environment. The tuning variables in designing the controller were variables c and φ that were used to adjust the modulation index and firing angle of switches. In order to achieve the best possible state, the artificial honey bee colony algorithm was used.

Controller Design of STATCOM for Power System Stability Improvement Using Honey Bee Mating Optimization

Damping of low frequency electromechanical oscillations is very important for a safe system operation. The fast acting, of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) which is capable of improving both steady state and dynamic performance permits newer approaches to system stabilization. This paper presents a novel methodology for tuning STATCOM based damping controller in order to enhance the d...

Energy Efficient Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks by Using Honey Bee Mating Optimization

Mobile Ad hoc networks (MANETs) are composed of mobile stations communicating through wireless links, without any fixed backbone support. In these networks, limited power energy supply, and frequent topology changes caused by node mobility, makes their routing a challenging problem. TORA is one of the routing protocols that successfully copes with the nodes’ mobility side effects, but it do...

Application of honey-bee mating optimization algorithm on clustering

Cluster analysis is one of attractive data mining technique that use in many fields. One popular class of data clustering algorithms is the center based clustering algorithm. K-means used as a popular clustering method due to its simplicity and high speed in clustering large datasets. However, K-means has two shortcomings: dependency on the initial state and convergence to local optima and glob...

Optimization of Combined Heat and Power Systems using a Hybrid Algorithm of Ant and Bee Colony Optimization

Abstract: In the last few years, due to the development of the new equipment in power systems, challenges have appeared in their planning and operation. One of these issues is the development of combined heat and power (CHP) units. These units have the capability to generate heat and electricity simultaneously according to their limitations. Hence, it is necessary for them to think about the ar...

A honey-bee mating optimization algorithm for educational timetabling problems

In this work, we propose a variant of the Honey-bee Mating Optimization Algorithm for solving educational timetabling problems. The honey-bee algorithm is a nature inspired algorithm which simulates the process of real honey-bees mating. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested over two benchmark problems; exam (Carter’s un-capacitated datasets) and course (Socha datasets) timetablin...
