Improving Alstroemeria Vase Life by Plant Extracts and 8-Hydroxyquinoline Sulfate

Authors

Abstract:

The effects of savory, caraway, and rose extracts and 8-HQS were studied on the vase life of Alstroemeria cut flowers. The plant extracts at three levels (10, 20, and 40 %), 8-HQS at three levels (100, 200, and 300 mg l-1), and control (distilled water) with 3 % sucrose were continuously applied on the basis of a Completely Randomized Design with three replications. It was found that the treatments were more effective on sustaining vase life as compared to control. The application of 8-HQS at the rates of 200 and 300 mg l-1 resulted in the longest vase life of 19.83 and 19.66 days, respectively. Among plant extracts, 20 % savory showed the longest vase life (18 days). The highest solution uptake (1.81 ml g-1FW) was associated with the application of 20% savory extract. The treatments of 10, 20, and 40 % savory extract and 200 mg l-1 8-HQS were the most successful treatments in sustaining fresh weight. The lowest bacterial population in vase solution (3 Log10 CFU ml-1) was observed in the treatment of 200 mg l-1 8-HQS. The treatments of 20 % savory extract and 200 mg l-1 8-HQS had the lowest electrolyte leakages of 4.46 and 4.93 %. The treatments of 40 and 20 % savory extract were the most effective treatments in reducing MDA accumulation. Given these results, it is recommended to use savory extract as a natural, environment-friendly compound to improve post-harvest traits and extend the longevity of Alstroemeria cut flowers.

Effect of peppermint and rose extracts on vase life of cut Alstroemeria ‘ Bali’ flowers

In this study, the effects of peppermint and rose extracts on delaying the aging of Alstroemeria spp. cut flowers were investigated. Peppermint and rose extracts were used in concentrations of 10, 20 and 30%. Quantitative and qualitative traits such as vase life, flower opening index, water uptake, fresh weight, dry weight, population of bacteria in vase solution and stem end, ion leakage, decr...

Vase Life and Quality of Cut Alstroemeria as Affected by Integrated Application of Plant Essential Oils and Non-Chemical Treatments

Alstromeria has beautiful flowers that is popular in the world. One of the most problem in commercial of this flower is ethylene sensitivity and bacterial contamination in stem end of cut flowers. In this experiment, effect of essential oils of bitter orange (0, 25 and 50 mg l-1) and lawson cypress (0, 100 and 200 mg l-1) and nonchemical treatment (with and without) with 18 treatments, 3 replic...

Comparison Tea Extract, 8-Hydroxyquinoline Sulfate and Rifampicin on the Vase Life of Cut Flower chrysanthemum (Denderanthema grandiflorum L. cv. Purple)

Maintaining quality and longevity of cut flowers is one of the critical issues in the floriculture industry, especially in cut flowers; and one of the most important problems in chrysanthemum, as one of the most popular cut flowers. Therefore, an experiment was conducted based on completely randomized design as pulse treatment with the three factors: tea extracts with 4 levels (5, 10, 20, and 4...

The Effect of Ethanol and Cycloheximide on the Vase Life of Cut Flowers Alstroemeria (Alstroemeria hybrida)

Alstroemeria is one of the most beautiful flowers in the family Alstroemeriaceae. One of the major problems of this cut flower is short life of leaves, this fact reduces the economic value of this cut flower. Abscission of petal before wilting is also considered as one of the most important problems of this flower. Petals of this flower are very sensitive to ethylene. A factorial experiment bas...

Influence of type and concentration of sugars, supplemented with 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate, on the vase life of waxflower

A study was conducted to test the effect of 58.5 mM maltose, glucose, fructose, galactose and sucrose, and sucrose concentrations of 14.6, 29.2, 58.5 and 117.0 mM supplemented with 200 mg L-1 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (HQS) on the vase life and stem fresh weight changes in waxflower (Chamelaucium Desf.). The effect of the interaction between sucrose and HQS concentrations on the vase life of ...
