Abstract:

Introduction: In this study the automatic separation of oral and salivary gland activity and spontaneous secretion by means of factor analysis for quantitative salivary gland scintigraphy is introduced. Methods: After intravenous administration of 99mTc sodium pertechnetate, dynamic scintigraphy was performed. 20 minutes after tracer application 2 ml of lemon juice was delivered to stimulate the glands. Applying elliptical regions of interest for oral cavity and four major salivary glands and using factor analysis of medical image sequences (FAMIS) results in factor images and curves, which are used for quantification of the oral, sublingual and glandular activity indexes. Results: With FAMIS it is possible to automatically separate the three superimposed processes seen in salivary gland scintigraphy: glandular and oral activity and spontaneous secretion that results in significant different quantitative results. Conclusion: The application of factor analysis improves the results of salivary gland scintigraphy by separation of superimposed dynamic processes of oral and glandular activity and spontaneous secretion.

Quantitative salivary gland scintigraphy.

OBJECTIVE Uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate in salivary glands reflects intact salivary gland parenchyma. However, no standardized protocol for an accurate quantification of parenchymal function has been established so far. METHODS In this paper we report on a validated acquisition protocol supplying a normal database for standardized quantitative salivary gland scintigraphy. RESULTS The major ...

Assessment of salivary gland function in Sjögren's syndrome: the role of salivary gland scintigraphy.

Salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) is a non invasive method of salivary gland function assessment. This technique is easy to perform, reproducible and well tolerated by patients. Additionally, an abnormal salivary gland scintigraphy result is accepted by the American-European consensus group as a criterion for the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome. Scintigraphic evaluation of salivary gland functi...

Patterns of salivary gland uptake in I-131 MIBG scintigraphy.

I-131 MIBG scintigraphy is routinely used in the diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumours with high specificity. The radiopharmaceutical is taken up via uptake mechanism and actively transported into storage vesicules. The organs with dense sympathetic innervation such as salivary glands, heart, lachrymal glands, spleen and rarely adrenal medulla are normally visualized with I-131 MIBG. Asymetrical ...
