Abstract:

Background: There is evidence that exposure to heat stress over time may lead to chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to summarize the evidence on the effects of heat stress on renal function among individuals exposed to occupational heat stress. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, all papers on the effect of heat stress on kidney function among workers at any workplace and heat level were included. Reviews, case reports, conference proceedings, letters, editorials, abstracts without full text, in-vitro, and animal studies were excluded. Furthermore, studies conducted on children, general populations, and hospitalized patients, as well as those not measuring heat stress, were also excluded. Medline, Scopus, ISI, and Embase databases were searched from 1st January 1991 to 19th October 2021. Search criteria were prepared by combining an 'exposed population' AND 'exposure' AND 'outcome' keywords. Quality assessment was done using the National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment tool. Results: A total of 24 articles with 14,282 participants were considered for qualitative synthesis. Although most papers indicated a positive association between heat stress and kidney dysfunction, especially regarding dehydration, the present study found heterogeneous evidence. Glomerular filtration rate, serum creatinine level, and albumin-to-creatinine ratio, due to occupational heat stress, were other markers mentioned in primary studies. Conclusions: This review highlighted the impact of occupational heat stress on renal function. Among the markers investigated in this review, most studies reported a positive association between occupational heat stress and dehydration.

The impact of terminal heat stress on yield and heat tolerance of bread wheat

In arid and semi-arid regions of the world bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield is highlylimited due to late season heat stress, mostly occurring during the reproductive phase. Hence thecurrent study was conducted to evaluate the effect of late season heat stress on grain yield andyield components of 20 spring bread wheat cultivars. For this purpose, a stripe block experimentincluding four ...

Heat stress in the workplace.

BUMC PROCEEDINGS 2000;13:349–350 Many work environments expose workers to extremely hot and humid conditions. The most vivid example of this is the firefighter, who inevitably must tolerate heat stress as part of the risks inherent to his or her job. Whereas the worker is expected to report imminent heat exhaustion before catastrophe occurs, ultimately the employer is held liable by the Occupat...

Impact of Heat Stress on Poultry Production

Understanding and controlling environmental conditions is crucial to successful poultry production and welfare. Heat stress is one of the most important environmental stressors challenging poultry production worldwide. The detrimental effects of heat stress on broilers and laying hens range from reduced growth and egg production to decreased poultry and egg quality and safety. Moreover, the neg...

Impact of Heat Stress on Female Fertility

The Nature of the Problem Heat stress has two major actions on physiology of the female that reduce the probability of a cow becoming pregnant. First, heat stress reduces ability to detect estrus. On one dairy in Florida, only about 18-24% of estruses in hot months were detected by herdsmen while 45-56% of estrus periods were detected in cool months (Thatcher and Collier, 1986). The reduction i...
