Identification of Malignant Cells in Serous Fluids Using a Panel of Monoclonal Cytokeratin Antibodies, Epithelial Membrane Antigen(EMA) , Carcino Embryonic Antigen (CEA)
Authors
Abstract:
Abstract Background and Objective: Identification of malignant cells and the type of malignancy in Effusionsis very important. The main aim of this study was to differentiate between reactive mesothelial cells and malignant cells and to determine the type of the tumor cells in effusions with the aid of tumor markers Creatine Kinase (CK), EMA and CEA. Material and Methods: Forty serous fluid cytology samples delivered to pathology laboratory of Panje- Azar Hospital (15 were malignant and 25 were suspected for malignancy) were stained by immunocytochemistry technique with the aid of aforementioned tumor markers, CK, EMA and CEA. Results: Of 15 malignancy cases, 13 were positive for three markers and the rest were negative just for CEA. In 25 of suspected to malignancy for EMA: 15 were strongly and 6 weakly positive and 4 were negative for CK : 10 were strongly and 5 weakly positive and 5 cases were negative and for CEA : 5 were strongly and 5 weakly positive and 15 were negative. Conclusion: Totally, % 87.5 of malignant fluid were positive for CK marker and %90 for EMA marker. EMA and CK were found to be the most reliable epithelial markers and very useful in differentiating carcinoma cells from reactive mesithelial cells. In Ten (40%) of the samples suspected to adenocarcinoma, CEA was positive and this indicate that CEA can be an important reference for identifying malignant effusions. Identification of Leishmania species using monoclonal antibodies in Isfahan
Background: Isfahan is one of the major foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran. According to the epidemiological studies, both urban and rural forms have been reported in Isfahan. Accurate identification and characterization of Leishmania is essential for the control of the disease. Several different molecular techniques for Leishmania identification are developed including use of monoclonal a...
full textCharacterization of monoclonal antibodies to novikoff hepatoma cytokeratin antigen p39.
Three stable monoclonal antibody-producing mouse hybridoma lines have been developed which produce high-titer, immunoglobulin M antibodies specific for the Novikoff ascites hepatoma (NAH) Mr 39,000 cytokeratin antigen (p39). Immunotransfer assays of cytoskeletal protein-enriched fractions indicated p39 to be present in a range of rat tissues, including colon, breast, lung, and uterus. Two-dimen...
full textProduction and Characterization of Monoclonal Antibodies Recognizing a Common 57-kDa Antigen of Leishmania Species
Background: The therapy of leishmania infection is difficult and each year 1.5 million new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis and 500,000 new cases of visceral leishmaniasis are estimated, therefore, there is a need for an effective vaccine. Monoclonal antibody (mAb) is one of the suitable methods for isolation and purification of leishmania antigens. In this report, we produced several mAb aga...
full textMucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas with neuroendocrine cells and malignant stroma.
Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCN) with malignant sarcomatous stroma are rare aggressive tumors and there are few recorded cases. We report a case of MCN that had adenocarcinoma in situ and invasive adenocarcinoma with foci of sarcomatous stroma in a 40-year-old woman. Clear transition from adenocarcinoma areas into sarcomatoid foci was noted. The stromal component showed immunoreactivity for CK7 ...
full textIdentification of Rat Membrane Proteins Hepatocyte Plasma Using Monoclonal Antibodies
We have localized and identified five rat hepatocyte plasma membrane proteins using hybridoma technology in combination with morphological and biochemical methods. Three different membrane preparations were used as immunogens: isolated hepatocytes, a preparation of plasma membrane sheets that contained all three recognizable surface domains of the intact hepatocyte (sinusoidal, lateral, and bil...
