Hypoglycaemic effect of Phaseolus vulgaris L. extract in streptozotocin-diabetic rats
Authors
Abstract:
In traditional practice medicinal plants are used in many countries to control diabetes mellitus. Plant drugs are frequently considered to be less toxic and more free from side effects than synthetic ones. Phaseolus vulgaris L. is a common vegetable used since ancient times. It has been shown to posses many medicinal properties. In the present study, intraperitoneal administration of alcoholic extract of sheath on level of blood glucose in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats was evaluated. The results showed that the extract decreased blood glucose in diabetic animals significantly. These results confirmed the use of Phaseolus vulgaris in folklore practice as an anti-diabetic plant.

Antioxidant effect of Phaseolus vulgaris in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
The antioxidant effect of an aqueous extract of Phaseolus vulgaris pods, an indigenous plant used in Ayurvedic medicine in India, was studied in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Oral administration of Phaseolus vulgaris pod extract (PPEt; 200 mg/kg body weight) for 45 days resulted in a significant reduction in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and hydroperoxides. The extract al...

OBJECTIVE To achieve a primary pharmacological screening contained in the aqueous extract of Berberis vulgaris (B. vulgaris) and to examine the hypoglycaemic effect and biochemical parameters of aqueous and saponins extract on groups of rats rendered diabetic by injection of streptozotocin. METHODS The phytochemical tests to detect the presence of different compounds were based on the visual ...

The hypoglycaemic effect of the methanol extract of Irvingia gabonensis seeds (Irvingiaceae) was examined in streptozotocin-diabetic rats. A single oral administration of the methanol extract at doses of 150 and 250mg/kg significantly (P < 0.001) lowered the plasma glucose levels in diabetic rats two hours after treatment.
