Hydroethanolic extract of Carthamus tinctorius induces antidepressant-like effects: modulation by dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in tail suspension test in mice
Authors
Abstract:
Objective(s): Studies indicate that major deficiency in the levels of monoaminergic transmitters is a reason for severe depression. On the other hand, it is shown that Carthamus tinctorius L. (CT) may improve neuropsychological injuries by regulation of the monoamine transporter action. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the involvement of monoaminergic systems in antidepressant-like effect of CT extract in the tail suspension test (TST) in mice. Materials and Methods: The mice were intraperitoneally (IP) treated with CT extract (100–400 mg/kg) 1hr before the TST. To investigate the involvement of monoaminergic systems in antidepressant-like effect, the mice were treated with receptor antagonists 15 min before CT extract treatment (400 mg/kg, IP) and 1hr before the TST. Results: Findings showed that CT extract (100–400 mg/kg, IP), dose-dependently induced antidepressant-like effect (P

Antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects of methanolic extract of Salvia spinosa L. in mice
Introduction: Development of new medicines with fewer adverse effects and more efficacies is needed for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the putative antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of methanolic extract of Salvia spinosa L. (SS) in mice. Materials and Methods: Elevated plus-maze (EPM) and open field tests (OFT) were conducted to evaluate anti...
full textAnalgesic effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Zingiber and piper nigrum in mice by tail-flick test
in traditional medicine, some plants have been used as analysics.the aim of this investigation was to evaluate the analgesic effect of two plants, piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale that are used traditionally to relieve headache, rheumatic arthritis, and toothache.for this purpose the methanolic extract of zingiber and piper nigrum,in different doses, were injected intraperitonealy to mice and t...
full textBiphasic Effects of α-Asarone on Immobility in the Tail Suspension Test: Evidence for the Involvement of the Noradrenergic and Serotonergic Systems in Its Antidepressant-Like Activity
Alpha (α)-asarone is one of the main psychoactive compounds, present in Acorus species. Evidence suggests that the α-asarone possess an antidepressant-like activity in mice. However, the exact dose-dependent effect of α-asarone and mechanism(s) involved in the antidepressant-like activity are not clear. The present study aimed to investigate the dose-dependent effect of α-asarone and the underl...
full textAntidepressant-Like Activity of the Ethanolic Extract from Uncaria lanosa Wallich var. appendiculata Ridsd in the Forced Swimming Test and in the Tail Suspension Test in Mice
This study investigated the antidepressant activity of ethanolic extract of U. lanosa Wallich var. appendiculata Ridsd (UL(EtOH)) for two-weeks administrations by using FST and TST on mice. In order to understand the probable mechanism of antidepressant-like activity of UL(EtOH) in FST and TST, the researchers measured the levels of monoamines and monoamine oxidase activities in mice brain, and...
full textEvaluation of the analgesic effect of Mellissa officinalis extract by tail-flick test in mice
Bibliographical studies have been done on plants that are used as analgesics in traditional medicine, and Mellissa officinalis or Lemon Balm (LB) that there are some evidence indicating for its application as analgesics or its probable analgesic effect was selected for evaluation of analgesic effect by tail-flick test in mice. After scientific identification, the leaves and flowered branches ...
