Abstract:

Distributed storage systems are mainly justified due to their ability to store data reliably over some unreliable nodes such that the system can have long term durability. Recently, regenerating codes are proposed to make a balance between the repair bandwidth and the storage capacity per node. This is achieved through using the notion of network coding approach. In this paper, a new variation of these codes, called hybrid regenerating codes incorporating a super node is proposed, showing in some cases the new code outperforming existing regenerating codes in terms of the repair bandwidth and/or download cost.

Regenerating Codes and Locally Recoverable Codes for Distributed Storage Systems

We survey the recent results on applying error control coding to distributed storage systems. In such systems, errors often happen in a burst manner, or maybe only one storage node in the whole distributed system fails. Therefore, only a small amount of information, e.g., one data fragment, has to be recovered. Therefore, accessing the whole data is unnecessary. Especially, we focus on regenera...

Deterministic Regenerating Codes for Distributed Storage

It is well known that erasure coding can be used in storage systems to efficiently store data while protecting against failures. Conventionally, the design of erasure codes has focused on the tradeoff between redundancy and reliability; under this criterion, an Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) code is optimal. However, practical storage systems call for additional considerations. In particular,...

Exact Regenerating Codes for Distributed Storage

Erasure coding techniques are used to increase the reliability of distributed storage systems while minimizing storage overhead. The bandwidth required to repair the system after a node failure also plays a crucial role in the system performance. In [1] authors have shown that a tradeoff exists between storage and repair bandwidth. They also have introduced the scheme of regenerating codes whic...

On Heterogeneous Regenerating Codes and Capacity of Distributed Storage Systems

Heterogeneous Distributed Storage Systems (DSS) are close to real world applications for data storage. Internet caching system and peer-to-peer storage clouds are the examples of such DSS. In this work, we calculate the capacity formula for such systems where each node store different number of packets and each having a different repair bandwidth (node can be repaired by contacting a specific s...

A Generalization of Regenerating Codes for Clustered Storage Systems

We study a generalization of the setting of regenerating codes, motivated by applications to storage systems consisting of clusters of storage nodes. There are n clusters in total, with m nodes per cluster. A data file is coded and stored across the mn nodes, with each node storing α symbols. For availability of data, we demand that the file is retrievable by downloading the entire content from...

Searching for Minimum Storage Regenerating Codes

Regenerating codes allow distributed storage systems to recover from the loss of a storage node while transmitting the minimum possible amount of data across the network. We present a systematic computer search for optimal systematic regenerating codes. To search the space of potential codes, we reduce the potential search space in several ways. We impose an additional symmetry condition on cod...
