Abstract:

Background: Human Bocavirus ( HBoV) infection is of worldwide distribution. There is increasing evidence that HBoV is pathogenic for the human gastroenteric tract. However, less data are available on the role of HBoV in gastroenteritis. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of HBoV in children with gastroenteritis.   Methods : Real-time PCR TaqMan was used to screen 200 stool specimens that had been referred to the virology laboratory for HBoV evaluation. All of samples were collected on viral transport media.   Results: Of the 200 stool samples analyzed, 16 (8%) were positive for HBoV. Human Bocavirus positive samples from patients aged between 1 to 5 years with acute gastroenteritis infection suggest a minor role of HBoV in gastroenteritis (p=0.0001).   Conclusion : The study showed a high prevalence of human Bocavirus in young children with acute gastroenteritis diseases in Iran, suggesting that HBoV play a role in the pathogenesis of gastroenteritis.

Human Bocavirus in Children with Acute Gastroenteritis, Chile, 1985–2010

We detected human bocavirus in 89 (19.3%) of 462 fecal samples collected during 3 periods from 1985 through 2010 from children <5 years of age in Chile who were hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis. Our findings confirm the long-term circulation of human bocavirus in Chile.

A Novel Bocavirus Associated with Acute Gastroenteritis in Australian Children

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common illness affecting all age groups worldwide, causing an estimated three million deaths annually. Viruses such as rotavirus, adenovirus, and caliciviruses are a major cause of AGE, but in many patients a causal agent cannot be found despite extensive diagnostic testing. Proposing that novel viruses are the reason for this diagnostic gap, we used molecular s...

Human Bocavirus Infection in Children with Gastroenteritis, Brazil

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was detected in 14 (2%) of 705 fecal specimens from Brazilian children with gastroenteritis. Coinfection with rotavirus, adenovirus, or norovirus was found in 3 (21.4%) HBoV-positive specimens. None of the HBoV-positive patients had respiratory symptoms.

Human Bocavirus and Gastroenteritis

To the Editor: We read with great interest the recent study by Vicente and colleagues, who suspect the human bocavirus (HBoV), a newly detected parvovirus initially described as a respiratory pathogen, to be a possible causative agent of gastroenteritis in children (1). These researchers investigated the presence of HBoV DNA in 527 stool samples from ambulatory patients (<36 months of age) with...
