High-Density Lipoprotein Measurement Methods: From Precipitation to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)

Authors

Abstract:

Introduction: Extensive research suggests a common hypothesis regarding the protective role of total high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) against cardiovascular disease (CVD). This hypothesis indicates an inverse relationship between CVD and high HDL-C levels. Various mechanisms, such as reverse cholesterol transport, besides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions, indicate HDL-C as one of the potential predictors of CVD risk. Therefore, it is important to be familiar with different methods of HDL-C measurement and to evaluate their advantages and disadvantages. In this study, after reviewing the nature, function, and protective role of HDL-C against CVD, the HDL-C measurement methods were evaluated. Also, some interfering molecules due to interventions and some strategies to reduce interference were discussed. It seems that the increased use of homogenous measurement methods is related to some disadvantages, such as high cost, manual separation, time-consuming design, and structure manipulation, in first- and second-generation chemical methods, as well as methods based on physical properties. On the other hand, targeted assessment of HDL-C function and protective role can be a novel approach to predict the risk of CVD. However, all of these methods require further improvement and optimization.

Computational Investigation on Naphthoquinone Derivatives :Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Quantum mechanic

Naphthoquinones are natural aromatic compounds that can be discovered in various plant families. In recent times a diversity of biological activities of these compounds has been reported. In most cases, these pharmacological activities are related to redox and acid-base properties, which can be modulated synthetically by modifying the substituents attached to the 1, 4- naphthoquinone ring, in o...

Triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholestrol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios are predictors of cardiovascular risk in Iranian adults: Evidence from a population-based cross-sectional study

Background: The superiority of TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios in predicting  CVD risk is a matter of debates. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare TG/HDL-C and LDL-C to HDL-C ratios in predicting the risk of CVD events. Methods: In a population-based cross-sectional study, 567 representative participants aged 40 years or older were entered in the study in Babol, North of Iran. The...

Diagnostic Methods Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Exertional fatigue is a major limiting symptom in patients with heart failure. To investigate the metabolic basis of this fatigue, we used gated nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to compare inorganic phosphate (P), phosphocreatine (PCr) and pH levels, and fatigue (1 to 4+) during mild forearm exercise in eight normal men and nine men with heart failure. Wrist flexion every 5 sec for 7 min...

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy in Protein Research

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is increasingly used in protein research. It can be used for protein structure determination in solution, close to the physiological environment. It can determine also the protein dynamics which is very important to understand biological phenomena. This article summarizes about the techniques and methods in NMR routinely used in protein research.

Hyperpolarized Xenon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) of Building Stone Materials

We have investigated several building stone materials, including minerals and rocks, using continuous flow hyperpolarized xenon (CF-HP) NMR spectroscopy to probe the surface composition and porosity. Chemical shift and line width values are consistent with petrographic information. Rare upfield shifts were measured and attributed to the presence of transition metal cations on the surface. The e...
