Abstract:

The present study was carried out to evaluate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant effect of the methanol extract of Eupatorium ayapana (MEEA) (Family- Asteraceae) leaves in Wistar albino rats. The different groups of animals were administered with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) at 72 h interval. The MEEA at 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg and silymarin 25 mg/kg were administered to the CCl4 treated rats. The effect of MEEA and silymarin on serum transaminase (SGOT, SGPT), serum alkaline phosphates (SALP), bilirubin, uric acid and total protein were measured in the CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Further, the effects of the extract on lipid peroxidation (LPO), enzymatic antioxidant such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase (CAT), and nonenzymatic antioxidant like glutathione (GSH) were estimated. MEEA and silymarin produced significant (P < 0.05) hepatoprotective effect by decreasing the activity of serum enzymes, bilirubin, uric acid, and lipid peroxidation and significantly (P < 0.05) increased the levels of SOD, CAT, GSH and protein in a dose dependent manner. From these results, it was suggested that MEEA possesses potent hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties.

Antioxidant and Hepatoprotective Effects of Bauhinia racemosa Against Paracetamol and Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Liver Damage in Rats

The methanol extract of Bauhinia racemosa Lam. (Caesalpiniaceae) stem bark was investigated for the antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects in Wistar albino rats. Different groups of animals were administered with paracetamol (500 mg/kg, (p.o.) once in a day for 7 days) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) (30 % CCl4, 1 ml/kg b.wt. in liquid paraffin 3 doses (i.p.) at 72 h interval). The methanol e...

Potential Hepatoprotective Effect and Antioxidant Role of Methanol Extract of Oldenlandia Umbellata in Carbon Tetrachloride Induced Hepatotoxicity in Wistar Rats

The present work examines the protective mechanisms of methanol extract of Oldenlandia umbellata (MEOU) in carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats. Rats were treated with carbon tetrachloride at the dose of 1 ml/kg body weight intraperitonially once in every 72 hrs for 16 days. The hepatoprotective activity of methanol extract of Oldenlandia umbellata was evaluated by measuring levels of serum ma...

Hepatoprotective effects of Garcinia kola seed against hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats

The protective effects of Garcinia kola against a dose of Carbon-Tetrachloride (CC14)induced liver damage in experimental rats were investigated. The CC14 induction (administered intraperitoneally, 0.5m1/kg body weight in olive oil-0.5ml/kg body weight) led to significant increases in the levels of serum aspartate and alanine amino transferases, alkaline phosphatase and lipid peroxides in CC14 ...

Antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Artemisia dracunculus against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of the hydro-alcoholic extract of aerial parts of Artemisia dracunculus (HAAD) against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant activity was evaluated by reducing power, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2, 20-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulf...

Antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects of capsaicin against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential hepatoprotective utility of capsaicin against carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄)-induced liver injury and to explore the possible mechanisms whereby this agent mediated its beneficial effects. We randomized 40 rats into four groups for treatment with corn oil, CCl₄, capsaicin and both CCl₄ and capsaicin, respectively, for 8 weeks. At the end of the ex...
