Hemodynamic and Arterial Blood Gas Parameters during Cemented Hip Hemiarthroplasty in Elderly Patients
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Patients undergoing cemented hip hemiarthroplasty may develop bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) which is a leading cause of intraoperative complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate cardiovascular changes during cemented hip hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients. Methods: Cemented hip hemiarthroplasty was performed on 72 patients with femoral neck fracture. All patients were catheterized with a radial artery catheter to assess mean arterial pressure (MAP) and arterial blood gas (ABG) in these time points: just before cementation, just after cementation (0th), 5 min (5th) and 10 min (10th ) after cementation, and at the end of surgery (END). Also, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP & DBP), heart rate and any arrhythmia or cardiac arrest was evaluated. Results: Seventy-two patients (33 females, 39 males; mean age: 66.8±7 years) were evaluated. All parameters changed during cementation with a significant drop in MAP, SBP, and DBP immediately after cementation and pH and base excess decreased significantly (P

full textArterial blood gas and spirometry parameters affect the length of stay in hospitalized asthmatic patients
Background: Asthma is a common condition in general medical practice, and it accounts for about 1% of all ambulatory hospital visits. Nowadays, hospitalization rates for asthma have actually been increased in some demographic subgroups despite recent advances in treatment. Understanding the underlying factors that contribute to hospitalization and especially duration of the hospitalizatio...
full textEffect of Pressurized Cement Insertion on Cardiopulmonary Parameters during Cemented Hip Hemiarthroplasty: A Randomized Prospective Study
PURPOSE We aimed to investigate the cardiopulmonary effects of pressurized cement insertion in elderly patients undergoing cemented hip hemiarthroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a randomized prospective study on elderly patients undergoing cemented hip hemiarthroplasty. Patients were divided into pressurized and non-pressurized groups based on the pressure application during cement...
full textEarly Complications Following Cemented Modular Hip Hemiarthroplasty
INTRODUCTION Hemiarthroplasty is the recommended treatment for displaced, intracapsular, femoral neck fractures. This study aimed to evaluate the early complications following insertion of the JRI Furlong cemented hemiarthroplasty, a contemporary, modular, double tapered, polished prosthesis. METHOD A series of 459 consecutive patients (May 2006 - June 2009) treated with a JRI hemiarthroplast...
full textAcute Acalculous Cholecystitis following The Cemented Hemiarthroplasty in an Elderly Hip Fracture Patient: Case Report
Postoperative acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) was a well-known abdominal complication of general surgery [1-3], but in orthopedic surgery only sporadic case reports could be retrieved [4-7]. Postoperative AAC was unrelated to the biliary tract, which was characterized by gallbladder inflammation without evidence of calculi or sludge [8]. Once postoperative AAC occurs, the disease progresse...
