Grain size influence on the thermal properties of stabilized zirconia-nano spinel (Al2O3-MgO) composites
Authors
Abstract:
Abstract. Cubic crystalline oxides such as Y2O3 and MgO is used to stabalized zirconia phases at high temperature. In this paper the Y2O3 powder was added to stabilized zirconia and preparing a mixture of MgAl2O4 Spinel by mixing 1mol of nano-MgO with 1 mol of nano-Al2O3 powders. The spinel was added to the Y2O3-ZrO2 by various weight percentage (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%), and after that the specimens was prepared by axial pressing and sintered at 1550 oC for 4 hours as soaking time. The grain size was tested by using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and calculated for surface of specimens and it was found to be decreasing (> 0.6 µm) to (~ 108 nm). The thermal properties were clearly influenced by the structural characteristics of the MAS. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusion was decreased slightly from 5.7 to 5.5 W/m.K and from 2.5 to 1.5 mm2/s, respectively. The thermal capacity was increased from 483 to 615 J/kg.K, and thermal expansion coefficient was increased from 10 to 7.510-6 oC-1 due to the compatibility of thermal expansion coefficients of (Y-PSZ)-MAS oxides. Thermal properties values are compatible with thermal insulation requirements in energy storage applications.

Zirconia-spinel composites. Part II: mechanical properties
The mechanical properties (fracture strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers microhardness) of MgAl2O4 and x wt% ZrO2–MgAl2O4 (1 # x # 30) hot-pressed materials were measured at room temperature. Two kinds of materials, which were prepared from either ball-milled or attrited powders, were investigated. Compared with an unreinforced spinel, a twofold (or greater) increase in both strengthening ...
full textThe influence of nano MgO and BaSO4 particle size additives on properties of PMMA bone cement
A common technique to aid in implant fixation into surrounding bone is to inject bone cement into the space between the implant and surrounding bone. The most common bone cement material used clinically today is poly(methyl methacrylate), or PMMA. Although promising, there are numerous disadvantages of using PMMA in bone fixation applications which has limited its wide spread use. Specifically,...
full textMechanical and Morphological Properties of Polypropylene/Nano α-Al2O3 Composites
A nanocomposite containing polypropylene (PP) and nano α-Al2O3 particles was prepared using a Haake internal mixer. Mechanical tests, such as tensile and flexural tests, showed that mechanical properties of the composite were enhanced by addition of nano α-Al2O3 particles and dispersant agent to the polymer. Tensile strength was approximately ∼ 16% higher than pure PP by increasing the nano α-A...

Influence of Si-Doping of Nano-Ni Dispersed Al2O3 Composites on High-Temperature Oxidation
The oxidation kinetics of 5 vol% nano-Ni dispersed Al2O3 with Si-doping (nano-Ni/Al2O3-Si) was studied in the present paper. The starting powder mixture was prepared by drying aqueous slurry consisting of alumina with nickel nitrate and Si (OCH3)4. The powder mixture was reduced at 600 C for 12 h in a stream of Ar-1%H2 gas mixture. Nano-Ni/Al2O3-Si was densified by pulsed electric current sinte...
