Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) Effects on Puberty Timing, Reproductive Function and Behaviour in Adult Female Mice Following Neonatal Exposure
Authors
Abstract:
Background & Objective: Fennel, as an edible plant, and due to its estrogenic compounds, has widely been used as a therapeutic agent for centuries. In this study, the effects of neonatal exposure to fennel alcoholic extract (FAE), on the onset of puberty, estrus cycle, ovaries, and lordosis were investigated. Materials & Methods: In this experimental study, 48 female BALB/c pups were divided into 4 groups: control (without treatment), treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB), 100 and 200 (mg/kg bw) FAE that were daily administered for 5 days from birth. Results: The age at vaginal opening (VO) was significantly earlier in EB and 200 FAE. Body weight at VO was lower than control only in EB. A disrupted estrus cycle, decreased number of cycles and increased index diestrus were observed in EB and 200 FAE treated mice. Ovary weight in the EB-, 100- and 200 FAE-treated groups were lower. The number of Graafian follicles in the EB-, 100- and 200 FAE and number of corpus luteum in the EB and 200 FAE groups were lower than that of control females. Estradiol concentration increased in the EB and 200 FAE and LH concentration decreased in the EB-, 100- and 200 FAE groups. The lordosis quotient (LQ) was significantly low in the EB- and 200 FAE-treated groups, vis-à-vis the control group. Conclusion: The present results indicated that neonatal exposure to FAE induces early VO and disrupts ovary function. In addition, fennel acts like xenoestrogens and causes defeminization of the brain in the estrus cycle as well as lordosis in mice.

Study of Foeniculum vulgare Effect on Folliculogenesis in Female Mice
BACKGROUND Foeniculum vulgare (FVE) is used in traditional medicine for its antiseptic, palliative and anti-inflammatory effects. Traditionally, FVE is utilized for treating female infertility. The present study aims to investigate the effects of FVE extract on folliculogenesis in female albino mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this experimental study, a total of 20 female albino mice were divid...
full textAnti-mutagenic Effects of Fennel Plant (Foeniculum vulgare Mill) Seeds and Pure Anethole: An in vitro Test on Mice
In the present study Willbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride) was employed to induce mutagenic/ carcinogenic features in mice, i.e. undesirable cell division and DNA damage. The repair actions of fennel dry seeds and its extracted bioactive substance anethole supplied to Willbutrin-treatedmice in a dietary regime were investigated. Male Swiss albino mice (25-30gm) orally received Willbutrin dose (0...
full textEffect of the aqueous extract of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) on the kidney in experimental PCOS female rats
OBJECTIVE Foeniculum vulgare seed (F. vulgare) is an herbal plant which is used with phytoestrogene compounds for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treatment. In this research, renoprotective effect of the aqueous extract of Foeniculum vulgare (AEF) in experimental PCOS female rats is studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty female rats were randomly divided into five groups. The first group serve...
full textPhytotoxicity and stimulatory impacts of nanosized and bulk titanium dioxide on fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill).
The objective of the this study was to compare concentrations of nanosized TiO2 at 0, 5, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mg L(-1) with bulk TiO2 for phytotoxic and stimulatory effects on fennel seed germination and early growth stage. After 14 d of seed incubation, germination percentage highly improved following exposure to 60 ppm nanosized TiO2. Similar positive effects occurred in terms of shoot dry weigh...

Effects of biofertilizers and stacosorb polymer* on yield and yield components of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) under drought stress were evaluated using a split-factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the agricultural research farm of Lorestan University, Khorramabad, Iran in 2013. The factors included drought condition (stressed a...
