Abstract:

Fetus- in- fetu (FIF), is a rare congenital anomaly that occurs due to malformed fetus growing inside the twin. It occurs due to the aberration in the diamniotic monochorionic monozygotic twinning with unequal division of inner cell mass of blastocyst leading to inclusion of small cell mass inside the developing sister fetus. The most common presentation will be with intra-abdominal mass located in the upper quadrant retroperitoneally. Complete excision with meticulous dissection is curative and allows confirmation of diagnosis.

Fetus in Fetu ... A Rare Case Report ! !

Fetus in fetu is a rare congenital anomaly, commonly of monozygotic twin, in which one fetus grows inside another fetus. It is a parasitic twin, usually presents as an abdominal mass. Most common site is retro peritoneum but it can present anywhere. It should be differentiated from teratoma which has no axial arrangement and has got definite malignant potential. Different imaging modalities can...

Fetus in fetu: A rare case report

BACKGROUND Fetus in fetu is a rare congenital anomaly in which malformed fetus grows within the body of its twin. It is almost always detected as an abdominal mass in infancy. It is a parasitic twin of a diamniotic, monozygotic twin. It should be differentiated from teratoma which has no axial arrangement and has got definite malignant potential. Herein, we present a case of a two-month old fem...

Fetus-in-fetu: A Rare Congenital Anomaly

Two cases of fetus-in-fetu, on which we performed surgery in 2003 and 2006, are being reported. Both the cases presented with a lump in the abdomen. Radiology confirmed the diagnosis. The lumps were found in the retroperitoneum and successfully excised. Because of the rarity of the condition, these two cases are being reported with relevant salient features and are discussed in the light of ava...

Fetus in fetu: A rare presentation

A 17-month-old male child was brought to our department by his parents when they noticed a lump in the lower abdomen for last 3 days. Abdominal ultrasonography (US) revealed a large, hyperechoic, and heterogeneous mass, measuring about 56 mm × 34 mm × 48 mm, in the lower abdomen. Then, CT scan was performed to verify a large, complex, soft-tissue mass with bony elements [Figure 1]. At laparotom...

Fetus-in-fetu: MR appearance and a case report

Fetus-in-fetu is a rare congenital malformation in which a vertebra fetus is enclosed within the abdomen of a normally developing fetus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appears to be an ideal tool for demonstrating the wide range of tissue within such lesions, but there are only a few reports of the use of MRI in the identif ication of this anomaly. We present a case of fetus-in-fetu in which ...

Prenatal Diagnosis of Fetus in Fetu with a Well Formed Skull: A Rare Case Report

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare condition embryologically arising in monozygotic diamniotic twins with an incidence of 1:500,000 births. To the best of our knowledge, number of reported cases should not be more than 100 with majority of cases presenting in post natal life with only 5 cases detected prenatally. We are presenting a case diagnosed at 24 weeks of gestation on ultrasound with pre...
