Fecal carriage of Escherichia coli harboring extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) genes by sheep and broilers in Urmia region, Iran
Authors
Abstract:
Background: There is a growing concern on the impact of the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli isolated from animals on public health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of three classes of ESBL genes in E. coli isolates from sheep and broilers at a slaughter in Urmia region, Iran. METHODS: A total of 111 E. coli isolates were obtained from sheep (n=55) and broilers (n=56) fecal samples and the presence of blaCTX-M, blaTEM and blaSHV genes was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: In general, 32 of these isolates carried blaCTX-M, 16 blaTEM, and 17 blaCTX-M plus blaTEM. None of the isolates tested was positive for the blaSHV gene. Among the 55 isolates from sheep, 33 (60%) contained one or more ESBL encoding gene; 15 (27.2%), 10 (18.2%), and 8 (14.5%) isolates were positive for blaCTX-M, blaTEM, and blaCTX-M+blaTEM, respectively. Among the 56 isolates from broilers, 32 (57.1%) isolates carried at least one ESBL encoding gene; 17 (30.4%) and 6 (10.7%) isolates were positive for blaCTX-M and blaTEM genes, respectively, and the blaCTX-M+ blaTEM was identified in nine isolates (16.1%). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that sheep and broiler feces may be a reservoir of E. coli harboring ESBLs genes, with CTX-M being the predominant β-lactamase type. This may pose a public health risk, which requires future evaluation and control.

full textComparative possession of Shiga toxin, intimin, enterohaemolysin and major extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) genes in Escherichia coli isolated from backyard and farmed poultry
The present work was conducted to compare the occurrence of Escherichia coli possessing virulence and ESBL genes in backyard and farmed poultry. Three hundred and sixty samples from the poultry kept in backyard system and 120 samples from the farmed birds were collected from West Bengal, India. Among the E. coli isolates of backyard poultry (O2, O10, O25, O55, O60, O106, UT), none of them posse...
full textAppendical Perforation by Infection with Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-Producing Escherichia coli: Case Report
We report the very rare case of a huge appendical abscess with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) as the pathogen. There have been several reports of appendical infections such as appendicitis and appendical abscess caused by ESBL-producing bacteria in adults. The treatment of ESBL-producing E. coli infection is specific, and ESBL-producing bacteria hav...
full textFecal carriage of extended-spectrum β-lactamase- and AmpC- producing Escherichia coli among healthcare workers.
INTRODUCTION Commensal E. coli can be considered a reservoir of genes coding for antibiotic resistance that may be transmitted in hospitals by healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to determine the fecal carriage rate of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli among HCWs. METHODOLOGY Stool samples were collected from 200 HCWs. Phenotypic screening for ESBL and AmpC β-lact...
full textRisk Factors for Fecal Carriage of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. in the Community
Materials and Methods: A total of 928 stool samples admitted to the laboratory during a four-month period were included in the study. Samples were diluted in saline and cultured in two EMB agar plates supplemented with either 1 μg/ml cefotaxime or 1 μg/ml ceftazidime. All isolates that grew were identified to the species level. E. coli and Klebsiella spp. strains were tested for ESBL production...

BACKGROUND/AIM The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of fecal carriage of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria, enzyme types, and risk factors affecting colonization. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 576 stool samples from outpatients were examined between October 2012 and May 2013. Screening was done with selective EMB plates. ESBL were detected by doubl...
