Fatigue Analysis and Optimization of Crankshaft of V8 Diesel Engine

Authors

Abstract:

The crankshaft is one of the most critically loaded components as it experiences cyclic loads in the form of bending and torsion during its service life. Its failure will cause serious damage to the engine so it’s important at the time of design to verify fatigue strength. More challenges in crankshaft design due to increasing vehicle payloads, lower weight requirement, higher efficiency and longer durability life. In this study a dynamic simulation was conducted on a crankshaft from a V8 diesel four stroke engine. Finite element analysis was performed to obtain and analysis the variation of the stress magnitude at every location of crankshaft especially at critical points. Results obtained from the aforementioned analysis were then used in optimization of the crankshaft. Also accumulated fatigue damage caused by the change in loading in different crankshaft speeds was determined. The goal of this study is designing crankshaft with suitable and optimum dimensions which can serve the longer durability life without any failures.

The Analysis of Wheel Loader Diesel Engine Crankshaft Failure

The main purpose of this study is to review the cause for the crankshaft failure of six-cylinder diesel engine of a wheel loader after passing a short period of time. The failure had occurred after 4800 hours of in-service in the fifth crankpin of the crankshaft. Hardness and tensile tests were carried out to study their mechanical properties. Spectrophotometer machine was used to examine the c...

Multi-Body Dynamics Analysis of V-Type Diesel Engine Crankshaft

Based on the V-type diesel engine crankshaft system, the paper combined the finite element method (fem) and multi-body dynamics method together, made a virtual simulation analysis. First, by 3d software and finite element software to establish the multi-body dynamic models of the crankshaft, bearing and piston, then simulated the actual engine working condition, and got the data such as cranksh...

Failure Analysis of a Four Cylinder Diesel Engine Crankshaft Made From Nodular Cast Iron

The premature breakage in some four cylinder diesel engine crankshafts was reported. All crankshafts were failed from the same region. Failures had occurred in the first crankpin, the nearest crankpin to the flywheel. Dynamic analysis and finite element modelling were carried out to determine the state of stress in the crankshaft. FEM results revealed that the first crankpin fillet is the most ...
