Factors Affecting Body Condition Score and Its Relationship with Productiveand Reproductive Performances of Holstein Cows
Authors
Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to determine factors affecting body condition score (BCS) and its association with productive and reproductive performances in Holstein cows. Mixed model analysis was performed on monthly records of BCS from April 2006 to July 2012 comprising 34666 records from 3134 dairy cows in a large commercial dairy herd under arid climatic conditions of Isfahan in Iran. Body condition scores were recorded on a scale of 1 to 5. Fixed factors included in the final mixed model of analysis were evaluation year, parity and evaluation season and also year by parity, season by parity and year by season interaction effects. Average BCS in the dairy herd was 3.06 ± 0.77. The results showed that there was an increasing trend for BCS over the years from 2006 to 2012 (P

full textFactors affecting reproductive performance in high milk-producing Holstein cows.
Although the number of dairy farms is decreasing, that of large farms is increasing in Japan. Milk production in Japanese dairy cows has increased from 62 kg/year to 88 kg/year over the last 2 decades. However, Japanese dairy cows are experiencing a sustained decline in reproductive performance, calving intervals, and days open; further, the number of inseminations required for conception have ...
full textNon-Genetic Factors Affecting Stillbirth and its Effects on Longevity, Production, and Reproductive Performance in Holstein Cows of Iran
The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting stillbirth and the consequences of stillbirth on longevity, production, and reproductive performance in Holstein cows of Iran. Calving records from March 2000 to April 2009 comprising of 220,043 calvings on 102,199 cows in 33 herds were used. The results showed that 4.06% of the newborn calves died within 48 h of birth. The stillbirth...
full textEffect of temperature-humidity index on productive and reproductive performances of Iranian Holstein cows
Calving records from April 1996 to December 2005 comprising 31863 calving events of 1173 dairy cows in a large commercial dairy herd were used to evaluate the effects of heat stress, using temperature-humidity index (THI) on milk yield and composition and reproductive performance of Holstein dairy cows under humid climatic conditions of Rasht in Iran. THI values were grouped into six groups: 30...
full textBody condition score and live-weight effects on milk production in Irish Holstein-Friesian dairy cows.
The objective of the present study was to quantify the relationships among body condition score (BCS; scale 1 to 5), live weight (WT) and milk production in Irish Holstein-Friesian spring calving dairy cows. Data were from 66 commercial dairy herds during the years 1999 and 2000. The data consisted of up to 9886 lactations with records for BCS or WT at least once pre-calving, or at calving, nad...
full textAssociation between body condition score and live weight in pasture-based Holstein-Friesian dairy cows.
The objective was to quantify the strength of the relationship between body condition score (BCS) and live weight (LW) in pasture-based Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle, and to determine the kg LW per unit BCS. A total of 26021 test-day records with information on both BCS (1-10 scale, where 1 is emaciated and 10 is obese) and LW across 1110 lactations from one research farm were used in the anal...
