Abstract:

Objective: Several studies have assessed elder abuse, however, caregiver abuse by the elderly has been less addressed by the researchers. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of caregiver abuse by the elderly residents in Tehran nursing homes. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 124 elderly caregivers from 14 nursing homes in Tehran, 2020. Caregiver abuse was measured by SOVES[1] . The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics by the SPSS-24. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 36.74 (SD=8.38) and 68.5% were female. The prevalence of caregiver abuse was found to be 42.7% in the previous 12 months.  Of these, 37.1% had experienced verbal abuse, 12.9% threats, and 24.2% physical abuse. The Chi square test revealed a statistical significant association between job status and caregiver abuse (χ2 (1) =7.43, p=0.006, OR=4.03), wherein fulltime caregivers were four times more likely to experience abuse. Other inferential statistics revealed no significant association between age, sex, work history, direct labor ratio, and attending in educational program with caregiver abuse by the elderly residents in nursing homes. Conclusion: The findings from the current study showing high prevalence of caregiver abuse by the elderly, imply that policymakers develop and implement measures to protect of caregivers in nursing homes.   .1Survey of Violence Experienced by Staff
